A completely implantable apparatus is provided for treatment of tissue surrounding a cavity left by surgical removal of a brain tumor. The apparatus includes an inflatable balloon constructed for placement in the cavity. A subcutaneously implantable treatment fluid receptacle is provided for receiving a transdermal injection of a treatment fluid. A catheter connects the receptacle to the inflatable balloon. Various embodiments provide for simultaneous application of heat therapy and/or radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy to the remaining tissue surrounding the cavity from which the tumor was removed.

Tumor treatment

Implantable devices for treatment of proliferative disorders are described. In one aspect, the invention provides an implantable apparatus for treating a proliferative disorder in a patient. The device comprises a treatment fluid receptacle for receiving a treatment fluid, an inflatable balloon having a balloon body, a catheter connected between the treatment fluid receptacle and the balloon and defining a fluid flow path therebetween, and a diffusion barrier disposed in the fluid flow path between the treatment fluid receptacle and the balloon. Methods for treating proliferative disorders with the devices are also disclosed.

Inflatable devices for tumor treatment

An instrument for use in brachytherapy comprises a concentric arrangement of inner and outer distensible, spherical chambers disposed near the proximal end of a catheter body where one of the chambers is made to contain a radioactive material with the other chamber containing a radiation absorptive material, the apparatus functioning to provide a more uniform absorbed dose profile in tissue surrounding a cavity created by the removal of a tumor. An alternative embodiment includes non-spherical inner and outer chambers whose respective walls are spaced equidistant over the entire surfaces thereof.

Double-wall balloon catheter for treatment of proliferative tissue

An algorithm applied in the radiological treatment of tumors which minimizes a cost function which is quadratic in the residual between the prescribed dose distribution and the calculated resultant dose. Possible treatment arcs must be stipulated and the algorithm includes an automatic technique for multiple iso-center selection. One overall strategy can be specification of an unrealistically large number of beams (or arcs) and systematic deletion of those beams having the smallest recommended weights until a practical solution is obtained. Tumor, non-tumor, and avoidance areas can be defined. Constrained matrix immersion results in optimum weights and dosage in the treatment of the tumor.

Rapid optimization of stereotactic radiosurgery using constrained matrix

Methods and apparatus are provided for radiation treatment of a tumor using an inflatable treatment device placed in an incision adjacent the tumor. The inflatable device is filled with a radioactive treatment fluid.

Radiation treatment of tumors using inflatable devices

An upright mast is affixed to a horizontal supporting means which is pivotally mounted on a horizontal shaft seated in a mounting base whereby a horizontal resilient member, such as a spring, concentric with the shaft separately resists pivotal deflection in opposite directions of said upright member on its supporting base.
