A method for copying a plurality of files from a first file system to a tape-based file system, includes the steps of ingesting the plurality of files into the first file system, the first file system including a first system controller including a processor; assigning each of the plurality of files within the file system to a group with a file system application to create at least one file group; defining a desired order of the files in each of the at least one file group with the file system application to create at least one ordered file group; indicating when the at least one ordered file group is ready to be written to tape with the file system application to create at least one ready, ordered file group; and copying each of the at least one ordered file group with the first system controller to be written to the tape-based file system.

System and method for defining files on disk to be written to tape in a specified manner

A system () for at least one of writing data to tape media () and reading data from the tape media () includes a client application (); and a RESTful interface () through which the client application () transmits a request to at least one of write data to the tape media () and read data from the tape media () to a REST daemon (), the RESTful interface () being integrated with a SCSI interface (). The REST daemon () subsequently passes the request on to a data mover (), which opens a second RESTful interface () with the client application (). The client application () then sends the request to the data mover () via the second RESTful interface (). The data mover () then performs the request by moving the data between the client application () and the tape media (), with the data never landing on primary storage during such movement.

System and method for writing data to tape and reading data from tape using a restful interface

A system and method for use in an automated data storage cartridge library defines cartridges for use with an external host computer ('open' cartridges), and cartridges for use only internal to the library ('closed' cartridges). Cartridges may be &#x201c;virtualized&#x201d; by storing data from them on disk or closed cartridges, and then &#x201c;realized&#x201d; by writing data to physical cartridges. Virtual cartridges may be logically exported from one library to another. When new cartridges are introduced to the library, they may be designated with one of multiple designations or uses.
