An embodiment of the present invention is a technique to process an input/output (I/O) transaction. An emulated device driver in a guest partition interacts with a virtual machine (VM) manager in processing an input/output (I/O) transaction on behalf of an application via an operating system (OS). The I/O transaction is between the application and a device. A device emulator in a service partition communicatively coupled to the emulated device driver interacts with the VM manager in processing the I/O transaction on behalf of a device specific driver via the OS. The device specific driver interfaces to the device.

Exposing device features in partitioned environment

A method for preventing loopback of data packets sent between entities residing on a single host. In one embodiment, an auxiliary address shared among entities residing on the host indicates that a data packet is to be routed to an entity residing on the host. In another embodiment, a source address and a target address in a data packet header are switched while being routed to a target entity residing on the host.

Method for supporting IP network interconnectivity between partitions in a virtualized environment

Methods, apparatuses, articles, and systems for receiving a request for an allocation of one or more ephemeral ports from a pool of ephemeral ports associated with a physical device, for a virtual machine of the physical device, are described herein. In various embodiments, an ephemeral port manager of the physical device is adapted to allocate up to the one or more ephemeral ports requested from the pool of ephemeral ports, if up to the one or more ephemeral ports are available for allocation from the pool of ephemeral ports. In some embodiments, the ephemeral port manager is further adapted to mark the allocated one or more ephemeral ports as unavailable to meet an ephemeral port allocation request of another virtual machine of the physical device.

Supporting ephemeral ports in a virtualized environment

A system and process are described where a user of a mobile device grants access to resources associated with the mobile device to other users. Access is typically established when the user of the mobile device couples the device to a network environment and another user provides data that matches sharing criteria associated with the desired resource. The sharing criteria can include user ID/password combination, a network ID or a combination of both.

A method and apparatus for authenticating a Windows&#xae; system registry comprising generating and storing a user identity value. The user identity value is generated by inserting a user identity in a one way function. The technique also generates and stores a registry security value corresponding with the system registry. In one embodiment, the registry security value is obtained by concatenating system registry information, for example, system registry files or system registry handle keys, and inserting the concatenated system registry information in a one way function to obtain the registry security value. An application program authenticates the registry information before using the registry information. Alternately, the registry is monitored and a change to the registry is permitted if a user identity value is equal to the stored user identity value.

Method and apparatus for authenticating registry information

A layered resource data structure includes several layers of resources, organized by access priority. A code module is linked to an access path through the layers of the resource data structure. The code module requests resources by accessing the resources in turn in each of the layers of the resource data structure until a resource matching the resource request is located. Resources are added to and removed from the data structure without requiring custom code modifications.
