An internal combustion engine system includes an internal combustion engine, an air intake conduit, an exhaust system with a catalytic converter, a combined catalyst preheating/exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system with a recirculation passage, a heating element, and a preheating/EGR valve configured to selectively allow flow through the recirculation passage, and an electric turbocharger assembly including a compressor and a turbine rotatably coupled by a shaft. A controller is configured to operate in (i) a catalyst preheating mode where the preheating/EGR valve is opened to allow intake air into the recirculation passage, and the electric turbocharger compressor is operated to force intake air through the recirculation passage and the heating element to rapidly heat the catalytic converter, and (ii) an EGR mode where the throttle is opened to allow intake air to flow into the engine, and the preheating/EGR valve is opened to allow exhaust gas into the recirculation passage.

Dual function catalyst preheating and EGR system

An internal combustion engine includes a cylinder head with an exhaust manifold configured to supply exhaust gas through a main exhaust outlet to a main exhaust aftertreatment system having a main catalytic converter, a bypass passage in fluid communication with the exhaust manifold via a bypass port, a bypass catalytic converter disposed within the bypass passage, and a dual-acting valve assembly configured to move between a first position that seals the bypass port, and a second position that seals the main exhaust outlet. During cold start, long idle, and/or low main catalytic converter temperature conditions, the dual-active valve assembly is moved to the second position to direct exhaust flow through the bypass passage and the bypass catalytic converter to reduce emissions.

Dual-acting valve enabled catalyst bypass

An internal combustion engine system includes an internal combustion engine, a main exhaust aftertreatment system with a main catalytic converter configured to receive exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine, and a turbocharger turbine selectively rotatable in a first direction for a normal operation and an opposite second direction for a reverse rotation operation. A light-off catalyst bypass system with a bypass passage and a bypass catalytic converter is configured to selectively receive exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine and bypass the turbine. During cold start, long idle, and/or low main catalytic converter temperature conditions, the turbine is rotated in the second direction to restrict or prevent exhaust gas from flowing through the turbine to facilitate directing the exhaust gas through the bypass passage and the bypass catalytic converter.

Cold start catalyst bypass system

An engine system includes an internal combustion engine, a main exhaust aftertreatment system with a main catalytic converter, and a light-off catalyst bypass system with a bypass passage and a bypass catalytic converter. An emissions control system includes a controller in signal communication with a first temperature sensor disposed upstream of the bypass catalytic converter, and a second temperature sensor disposed downstream of the bypass catalytic converter. The emissions control system performs a diagnostic of the bypass catalytic converter, including (i) monitoring signals from the first and second temperature sensors for a predetermined time period during an engine cold start condition, (ii) determining a temperature of an inlet of the bypass catalytic converter, (iii) determining a temperature of an outlet of the bypass catalytic converter, and (iv) comparing the bypass catalytic converter outlet temperature to the bypass catalytic converter inlet temperature to determine if the bypass catalytic converter has failed.
