A continuous process for producing a shaped metal member from a feedstock comprising a flat web of metal includes a roll-forming station for shaping the web, a cutting station for cutting the shaped web into individual members, and a processing station for altering a physical characteristic of the metal comprising the members. The processing may include heat treating and/or shaping. The process may also be operable to carry out further operations such as marking, inspection, sorting and the like. Also disclosed is an apparatus for carrying out the process.

Continuous process for producing a shaped steel member

A system for delivering a coolant fluid to a workpiece has a reservoir for retaining the fluid, a pump for delivering fluid from the reservoir, a supply line in communication with the workpiece and a diverter valve. A bypass line is in communication with the diverter valve, and the valve may be utilized to deliver fluid from the reservoir to the workpiece or to bypass the workpiece and circulate fluid back to the reservoir. The system also includes a fluid return line for conveying fluid from the workpiece back to the reservoir.

A bumper beam and method of manufacture which includes roll-forming the bumper beam with a constant longitudinal cross section, and then reforming the roll-formed beam to form a tubular bumper beam having a constant area. The bumper beam area is designed to incorporate a longitudinal 'curvature' to form angular surfaces consistent with many modern automobile fascias, thereby, enabling high impact absorption efficiency.

A bumper system for an automotive vehicle includes a rolled steel tube having a box or C-shaped cross section fixed to the forward ends of the side rails of the vehicle so as to extend transversely to the vehicle's longitudinal axis. The forward surface of the vehicle is formed by a plastic fascia which may have sloped surfaces for styling or aerodynamic reasons. The space between the forward end of the bumper bar and the fascia is filled with foam intended to absorb energy in an impact. To better match the sloped sections of the fascia, certain sections of the bumper bar are twisted about the longitudinal axis of the bar to create surfaces inclined relative to the vertical. The bars are formed by roll forming a steel web into an elongated member having generally vertical opposed faces. A section of the rolled member is heated above a metallurgical transition temperature. Then sections to be inclined are twisted about the longitudinal axis of the bumper bar in a die forming station and are then quenched to form a hardened steel member.
