A safety system includes a safety response device positioned proximal to an aircraft seat. The safety response device is operable to deploy thereby controlling the leg extension condition of legs of an occupant of the aircraft seat. A triggering system is operable to activate the safety response device when a deceleration is detected. The safety response device can be operable to maintain the legs of a seated occupant in an un-extended condition thereby protecting the legs from extending when a rapid deceleration occurs. The safety response device can be operable to transition the legs of a seated occupant from an un-extended condition to an extended condition at a predetermined rate. The safety response device can be, for example, and airbag or a kick plate. The device may automatically return to a stowed condition a predetermined time after deployment to permit egress from the seat and aircraft.

Leg extension control devices and systems for vehicle seating

An apparatus for dynamically tilting a seatpan in an aircraft passenger seating assembly includes a seat frame, seatback, seat cushion, and cushion support structure (e.g., a seatpan), the seat cushion and seatpan together having a forward end and a rear end and together supporting a passenger occupying the seating assembly. Accelerometers may detect an inertial event such as a rapid deceleration that may cause the passenger to pitch forward; dynamic seatpan actuators (e.g., airbags or ballistic devices) connected to the accelerometers react to the inertial event by detonating, driving the seatpan and seat cushion upward. As a result, the head path of the passenger may be redirected upward, alleviating the risk of passenger injury and component damage. Additional airbags may react to the inertial event by tightening the passenger seatbelt.

Dynamically tilted seat pan

A device for controlling the breakover rate of a seatback in response to a dynamic event (regulating the breakover velocity so as to achieve optimal velocity differential to the impact velocity of a passenger's head impacting with the seatback) is attachable to the seatback and to the seat frame; when a breakover event is triggered, the passage of a head injury criterion (HIC) pin through a controlled traveling slot is impeded by energy absorbing materials selected, e.g. for material composition and structure, to restrict the breakover velocity of the seatback to optimize velocity differential between the breakover velocity and the impact velocity by engaging the HIC pin and deforming at a predetermined deformation rate.

Back breakover rate control device for HIC/NIJ damage reduction

An aircraft passenger seat having a dynamic breakover assembly includes a seat bottom frame and a seat back pivotally-mounted to the seat bottom frame that allows the angle of the seat back relative to the seat bottom frame to be varied from an upright taxi takeoff and landing (TTOL) position to a reclined position. The seat may include a means for sensing acceleration corresponding to a force indicative of an abnormal event; and a breakover mechanism coupled to the seat bottom frame and the seat back in which the means for sensing acceleration is coupled to the breakover mechanism. The breakover mechanism can prevent movement of the seat back in a forward direction past the TTOL position during normal use, and permit forward movement of at least a portion of the seat back in the forward direction past the TTOL position upon activation by the means for sensing acceleration.

Seat back breakover with dynamically triggered actuator

A medical application system and method for animals for delivering topical medication to the skin of an animal includes a propulsion device and a frangible capsule containing topical medication in liquid form. In a preferred embodiment the medication is an insecticide and is mixed with an oil based paint. In an alternate embodiment for medicating sheep the liquid is preferably a water based paint to prevent staining of the wool. It is also preferred that the propulsion device be a pump style pellet gun for allowing adjustment of the propulsion force provided to the capsule such that the capsule will impact the animal with sufficient force to break the capsule without harming the animal. In a most preferred embodiment, the capsule further contains a pellet for facilitating breakage of the capsule when the capsule impacts the animal.
