A method and a tool assembly maintain a tissue gap between distal portions of an anvil and a cartridge assembly of a stapling device. In embodiments, the tool assembly includes a locking member that is supported on one of the anvil and the cartridge assembly and is movable from an unlocked position to a locked position to secure distal portions of the anvil and the cartridge assembly together. In the locked position, the locking member is engaged with the distal portion of the other of the anvil and the cartridge assembly to maintain a tissue gap between the distal portion of the anvil and the cartridge assembly.

The present disclosure relates to a surgical stapling instrument comprising a handle assembly, an elongated body portion extending from the handle assembly, and an end effector supported on a distal portion of the elongated body portion. The end effector includes a curved housing having a base portion and a jaw portion, a curved anvil assembly supported on the jaw portion, and a curved cartridge assembly supported on the base portion. The cartridge assembly defining first and second arrays of staples receiving slots, the first array of staple receiving slots includes three rows of staples and the second array of staple receiving slots includes two rows of staples. A height of the staples in each of the rows of three rows of staples of the first array of staple receiving slots is different.

Methods include releasing a swallowable bundle of string of the cell collection device from a bundling apparatus, maintaining the string in a swallowable bundle while releasing the swallowable bundle from the bundling apparatus, and placing the swallowable bundle on the tongue of the patient. Methods also include constraining a retrieval string of the cell collection device in a swallowable bundle with a dissolvable band and placing the swallowable bundle on the tongue of the patient.

A surgical stapling apparatus includes an end effector having an anvil assembly and a staple cartridge assembly, and an anvil buttress retention system releasably disposed on the anvil assembly. The anvil buttress retention system includes an anvil buttress and a retention member including an elongated body looped around at least a portion of the anvil buttress with a free end of the elongated body extendable through a looped end of the elongated body in an untightened configuration such that the anvil buttress retention system is slidable relative to the anvil assembly. The free end of the retention member is movable relative to and through the looped end to a tightened configuration to secure the anvil buttress retention system to the anvil assembly.

A surgical apparatus used in an ostomy procedure includes an introducer configured for atraumatic insertion in a tissue opening and a dilator. The dilator includes an elongate body and an extension movably coupled to the elongate body. A distal portion of the elongate body is disposed within and axially movable relative to the introducer between first and second positions. The extension is configured to move from a retracted state to an expanded state in response to movement of the dilator relative to the introducer from the first position to the second position. In the retracted state, the extension is disposed within the introducer, and in the expanded state the extension projects laterally outward from the distal portion of the elongate body.

A surgical instrument for cutting tissue includes a sleeve, a shaft slidably disposed within the sleeve and defining a longitudinal axis, and a plurality of legs coupled to the shaft and disposed about the longitudinal axis. Each leg has a blade attached to an end portion thereof and each blade defines a cutting edge. The shaft is slidable relative to the sleeve between a collapsed configuration, wherein the legs are disposed within the sleeve, and an expanded configuration, wherein the legs extend distally and radially outwardly from the sleeve. In the expanded configuration, the cutting edge of each blade is disposed in a proximally-facing orientation. Alternatively, the shaft is rotatable relative to the sleeve to rotate the legs about the longitudinal axis, thereby rotating each blade through a circular cutting path defining a different diameter. A surgical instrument includes an elongate body, a toothed rack, and an end effector. The elongate body has a proximal end and a distal end and defines a first longitudinal axis. The toothed rack is disposed within the elongate body and is movable in a direction parallel to the first longitudinal axis. The end effector has a proximal end pivotally supported on the distal end of the elongate body. The end effector defines a second longitudinal axis and supports a gear operatively associated with the rack. Longitudinal movement of the rack effects pivotal movement of the end effector relative to the elongate body from a first position to a second position. In the first position, the second longitudinal axis is aligned with the first longitudinal axis. In the second position, the second longitudinal axis is misaligned with the first longitudinal axis.
