A diffusing unit includes: a polarizing plate; and a diffusing layer integrally provided on a surface of the polarizing plate without an air layer therebetween. By using a display apparatus employing a collimating light guide plate and the diffusing unit, the optical performances such as resolution and viewing angle can be improved. Also, because gray scale inversion and color shifts can be reduced or eliminated using collimated light, image quality of the display apparatus can be improved.

Collimating light guide plate, diffusing unit, and display apparatus employing the same

A light guide plate having a multi-periodic micro pattern, which can minimize chromatic dispersion, and an illumination apparatus for a display device employing the light guide plate are provided. The light guide plate includes a top surface and a micro pattern formed on the top surface and allowing light, which is incident from a first side surface of the light guide plate, to be emitted from the top surface. The micro pattern is a combination of at least two periodic patterns having different periods to reduce chromatic dispersion of light emitted from the top surface.

A diffuser sheet which compensates for chromatic dispersion generated in a hologram light guide plate, and an illumination apparatus employing the diffuser sheet are provided. The diffuser sheet includes a plate type light-transmissive substrate and a light diffusion layer disposed on a light emission surface of the light-emission substrate. A light-incident surface of the light-transmissive substrate has declined surfaces and flat surfaces which are alternatively and repeatedly formed thereon. The declined surfaces are declined at a predetermined angle.

Diffuser sheet for compensating for chromatic dispersion and illumination apparatus employing the same

Provided are a light guide panel and a display device employing the same. The light guide panel includes: an incidence surface facing a plurality of light sources separated apart a predetermined distance; at least one dark portion reducing unit that is formed on the incidence surface between adjacent pairs of the slight sources and at both edges of the incidence surface, and reflects the light incident from the light sources to reduce the creation of dark portion units; an upper surface transmitting a portion of incident light and reflecting the rest of the incident light; and a lower surface facing the upper surface and reflecting the light incident from the incidence surfaces and dark portion reducing units.

A backlight unit for a flat panel display and a flat panel display apparatus having the same. The backlight unit for a flat panel display includes a light source emitting light, a light guide panel having an incident surface facing the light source and totally reflecting light incident through the incident surface toward the flat panel display, a holographic pattern that is formed at at least one of an exit surface of the light guide panel or the opposing surface with a predetermined grating period and diffracts light incident into the light guide panel and a dot pattern containing a plurality of particles dispersed on the holographic pattern at intervals shorter than the grating period and scattering incident light.

Backlight unit for flat panel display and flat panel display apparatus having the same

A backlight unit for a flat panel display and a flat panel display apparatus having the same. The backlight unit for a flat panel display displaying a predetermined image includes: a light source which emits light; a light guide panel having an incident surface facing the light source and which totally reflects light incident through the incident surface toward the flat panel display; and a holographic pattern that includes a plurality of diffraction gratings that are continuously repeated on at least one of an exit surface of the light guide panel and the opposing surface and diffracts light incident into the light guide panel. A depth of the diffraction grating progressively increases away from the incident surface along a length direction of the light guide panel. The backlight unit for a flat panel display and the flat panel display apparatus having the same have a simple structure that can acquire surface light using a holographic pattern while achieving uniform brightness distribution across the entire light-emitting surface.

A light guide panel and a back light unit having the same are provided. The light guide panel includes an isotropic layer and an anisotropic layer. The isotropic layer includes an incident light surface, a transmission surface, and a polarization recycling unit, disposed opposite the transmission surface, which changes a polarization direction of light. The isotropic layer has a first refractive index. The anisotropic layer is formed on the transmission surface and includes a selectively transmitting and reflecting surface opposite the transmission surface, which reflects a first portion of incident light and transmits a second portion of incident light. The anisotropic layer has a first refractive index, identical to the first refractive index of the isotropic layer, with respect to light having a first polarization and has a second refractive index, different from the first refractive index with respect to light having a second polarization.

Light guide panel and back light unit having the same

An edge light type backlight unit having an improved light-reception portion. The backlight unit includes one or more light sources that emit light, a light guide panel that guides the propagation of light incident on one side edge thereof, one or more light-reception portions having a first entrance face slanted opposite the side edge of the light guide panel on which the light is incident at a predetermined angle, and one or more reflecting elements that are disposed between each of the light-reception portions and each of the light sources and guides the light emitted by the light source so that it is incident on the first entrance face.

Backlight unit

The backlight for a flat display device including a light source, a light guide plate and a surface hologram is provided. The light guide plate is installed at one side of the light source, and light from the light source travels in the light guide plate while being totally reflected. The surface hologram is formed on at least one surface of the light guide plate. The surface hologram has a pattern of a predetermined grating interval and a predetermined grating depth in order to diffract light at a predetermined angle toward the light guide plate.

An edge-light type backlight system including a point light source, a light guide panel including a light incident part into which light enters from the point light source and a light emitting surface from which light is emitted, and an optical path-changing unit which changes a propagation path of light traveling inside the light guide panel. The light incident part includes a light incident surface on which a prism pattern is formed, the light incident surface facing the point light source, and first and second surfaces extending from the light incident surface in a direction in which light travels inside the light guide panel and adapted to reflect light passing through the light incident surface to reduce a direction angle, the first and second surfaces being opposite to each other with respect to an optical axis.

Light guide panel of edge-light type backlight system and edge-light type backlight system employing the same

A liquid crystal display device for displaying an image by changing orientation of a liquid crystal layer sealed between two substrates includes a lower substrate having a microstructure which outputs light incident on a side surface of the lower substrate to an upper surface of the lower substrate, a light source emitting light to the side surface of the lower substrate, a selective reflection panel provided on the upper surface of the lower substrate to reflect light having a predetermined incident angle or more and transmit the remaining light, and a reflection panel provided under the lower substrate.

Liquid crystal display device

A backlight unit is provided including a light guide panel (LGP), a point light source emitting light at an edge of the LGP; and a refraction member being positioned between the point light source and the LGP and refracting the light emitted from the point light source toward the optical axis of the point light source in order to reduce the azimuth angle of the light that is incident upon the LGP. The refraction member includes a prism array in which a V-shaped prism pattern is repeatedly arrayed, the apex of the prism pattern facing the edge of the LGP, and a transparent portion that prevents the light from being totally reflected by the prism pattern in a region along an optical axis of the light source.

A backlight unit includes a point light source emitting light and a light guide panel including a holographic pattern formed to have a concentric circle shape having a center at the point light center. Thus, since the incident azimuth angle of light incident on the holographic pattern can be made constant, an efficiency of light exhausted through the light exhaust surface can be improved. Also, since the distribution of the exhaust azimuth angle of the exhaust light can be made uniform, a uniform brightness can be obtained from the exhaust surface.

A backlight unit includes a light guide panel where a holographic pattern is formed. A point light source emits light to an edge of the light guide panel. A refractive member is provided between the point light source and the light guide panel and reduces an azimuth angle of light incident on the light guide panel. The refractive member includes, from an optical axis of the point light source, a light transmission zone transmitting light as it is, a blaze zone where a blaze pattern having a saw-toothed shape in which one surface near the optical axis and substantially parallel to the optical axis is formed, and a prism zone where a triangular prism pattern is formed. The backlight unit may further include a diffusive member diffusing light emitted from the point light source to be incident on the refractive member.

An illumination apparatus for planar display devices, including an optical element for making light travel parallel to an optical axis, is provided. The illumination apparatus includes a dot light source for radiating light, and a light guide plate having the optical element. The optical element is composed of a first refraction facet, which is adjacent to the dot light source and increases the emission angle of the light, and a second refraction facet, which is isolated a predetermined distance from the first refraction facet while facing the first refraction facet and reduces the emission angle of the light. In this structure, the light travels parallel to the optical axis. In the illumination apparatus, the emission angle of incident light is reduced, preferably, the light travels parallel to the optical axis. Therefore, areas not reached by light, between adjacent dot light sources, are eliminated, and light is uniformly incident upon a hologram so that the luminance and intensity of light emitted from the light guide plate are uniformly distributed.
