A temporary circulatory assist pump is disclosed for implantation in the heart of a patient through the femoral artery. The pump is driven by a flexible drive shaft extending through a catheter and being connected to a power source outside the body of the patient. The pump utilizes the moineau pumping principal to pump blood at a rate of approximately three to four liters per minute through the circulatory system of the patient.

Heart assist pump

A catheter for performing an atherectomy procedure to remove plaque from an artery is disclosed. The catheter includes a plaque cutting head having an outer shell of thin flexible material generally cylindrical in cross-section and shaped to engage plaque in an artery. The outer shell has a plurality of openings through which the plaque will enter the shell as the shell is forced against the plaque. A cutter rotates inside the shell to cut the plaque that enters into the shell into small pieces as the catheter is pushed through an artery. A motor drive elongated drive shaft rotates the cutter.

Catheter for performing an atherectomy procedure

A combined check valve and fluid injector includes a valve body with an inlet, outlet and valve seat. A pump chamber is positioned at the outlet side of the valve seat and has a fluid inlet. A hollow piston member moves in the pump chamber and the hollow connection to the valve body. A ball check valve closing the valve seat is provided with a spring loaded valve follower. A hollow actuating rod extends from the valve follower into the hollow piston with a lost motion connection and has openings for discharge of fluid in the valve body. The piston is limited in movement by an adjustable stop member and has a check valve which opens on upward movement. Opening of the valve moves the rod and piston to pump fluid from the pump chamber into the fluid flowing through the valve body. A counter, or the like, may be provided for operation by piston movement for measuring frequency or distance of movement. Certain modifications may direct the fluid outside the chamber rather than into the valve body. Alternatively, a rubber plug sealed to the rod and to a supporting sleeve presses the rod against the valve follower to function as both spring and seal. The measuring device may also be a continuously functioning counter with an external pinion gear rotatable to move the counter; a rack member engages the pinion; and a reduction gear between the pinion and counter permits measuring the extent as well as the frequency of movement of the check valve.

Check valve with injector

A turbodrill which is connected to a string of drill pipe as a rotating shaft for driving a drill bit which may be a rotary bit or a high speed solid head diamond bit. The turbine section has rotor and stator blades which are cresent shaped in cross section with each blade having an exit angle of 14.degree.-23.degree. for maximum turbine efficiency. The bearing shaft is provided with chevron rotary seals positioned below the rotary bearings carrying both radial and vertical thrust. Fluid lubricant fills the space from the rotary seals to a predetermined level above the bearings. A piston seals the lubricant chamber and is pressurized by drilling fluid (i.e. mud) flowing through the tool. A layer of lubricant fluid overlies the first piston and has a second piston covering said fluid and transmitting pressure from the drilling fluid to the lubricant fluid surrounding the bearings. Rubber friction bearings which are cooled and lubricated by flow of drilling mud are provided between the rotor and stator bearing surfaces which provide for extended rotor bearing life and cushion the radial thrust bearings against radial shock and provide for a substantially extended life for the radial thrust bearings.

Turbodrill with rubber rotor bearings

Apparatus for directional drilling in the earth comprises a down hole motor having a stator housing adapted to be connected to a string of drill pipe at one end and having a rotor shaft extending out the other end. The rotor shaft is adapted to receive and drive any suitable rotary bit. The stator housing is provided with fulcrum means in the form of a barrel member having arcuate longitudinal cross section. The fulcrum member is of substantially the same size as the hole being bored and is engageable with the side wall of the hole to provide a fulcrum about the drilling motor can be turned to change direction. A suitable deflection means is positioned at the end of the stator housing adjacent to the connection to the drill string and includes a laterally moveable thrust member which is operable to engage one side of the hole being drilled to deflect the stator housing in the opposite direction and pivot the same on the fulcrum point to change the direction of the hole being drilled. The thrust member may be actuated by any suitable mechanical connecting means or is preferably operated by a remotely controlled pressure operated means.

Directional drilling apparatus

A shock sub for a well drilling string comprises a tubular housing adapted to be connected to one part of a drill string and a mandrel extending longitudinally into the housing and having an end portion adapted for connection to another part of the drill string. The mandrel and housing are shaped to define a non-circular annular cavity there between when assembled together. A compressible elastic metallic spring means is positioned in and substantially fills the non-circular annular cavity and is compressible longitudinally, radially and circumferentially to absorb longitudinal, radial and torsional vibration and impact loads and to transmit rotary movement between said housing and mandrel for imparting rotation from one part of the drill string to the other part connected by the drill sub. The spring means is preferably a knitted wire fabric or rope compressed into a compact mass capable of spring deflection in longitudinal, radial and circumferential directions relative to said shock sub assembly.

Drill string shock sub

There is disclosed a seal assembly comprising alternate, generally 'V'-shaped layers of graphite and a spring metal which are nested one within the other for sealing between the relatively movable, generally coaxial cylindrical surfaces of an annular recess in which the assembly is contained.

Seal assembly

Apparatus is disclosed that includes a housing through which extends a shaft, such as a drill string. A body of wire mesh is carried by the housing and located between the housing and the drill string. The wire mesh is compressed to cause it to expand laterally into engagement with the housing and drill string to hold the housing from movement relative to the drill string, to attach, for example, a stabilizer to the drill string, or to support at least a portion of the weight of the drill string.

Apparatus for gripping a shaft or the like

A seal is disclosed for use in high ambient temperatures. The seal includes a plurality of V-shaped seal rings having opposite convex and concave sides that are stacked or rested in the annular space provided between a shaft and a housing through which the shaft extends. Each seal ring includes an annular body of self-lubricating, low-friction graphite, which is a very good conductor of heat. The outer and inner edges of the annular body of graphite are moved into sealing engagement with the shaft and housing when the annular body is subjected to a differential pressure. A ring of spring metal that is V-shaped in cross-section is embedded in the annular body of graphite to support the annular body of low-friction material and hold it in position to form a seal between the shaft and the housing against the differential pressure exerted across the seal. One edge of the ring of spring metal engages the housing to provide a frictional force that resists relative movement between the seal ring and the housing and also to conduct heat from the seal directly through the spring metal into the housing in which the seal is located.
