The invention provides for engineered intestinal construct and methods of making these constructs. The invention also provides for methods of treating short bowel syndrome or methods of repairing an intestine after resection comprising inserting an engineered intestinal construct into the intestine of a subject in need.

Tissue engineered intestine

A method of treating a chronic wound may comprise applying to the wound a first scaffold comprising an electrospun polymer fiber. The electrospun fiber may comprise a polymer selected from the group consisting of polyglycolic acid, poly(lactide-co-caprolactone), polylactic acid, polycaprolactone, copolymers thereof, and combinations thereof. The first scaffold may have a thickness from about 50 μm to about 1 mm, a length from about 1 cm to about 20 cm, and a width from about 1 cm to about 15 cm. The method may further comprise keeping the first scaffold on the chronic wound for a time period of about 3 days to about 21 days. After the time period passes, the chronic wound may have a decreased planimetric area.

Methods of treating chronic wounds using electrospun fibers

The instant disclosure is directed to methods of improving bone-soft tissue healing using biocompatible electrospun polymer fibers. In one embodiment, a method may include locating a portion of a subject's bone, affixing a tendon or ligament to the bone using a hardware fixture, and placing a patch comprising at least one electrospun polymer fiber in physical communication with both the bone and the tendon or ligament. In some embodiments, the bone may be a humerus, and the tendon or ligament may be a supraspinatus tendon. In certain embodiments, the patch may comprise substantially parallel electrospun polymer fibers, and may be placed such that the fibers are also substantially parallel with the long axis of the tendon or ligament.

Methods of improving bone-soft tissue healing using electrospun fibers

A system for manufacturing an artificial construct suitable for transplantation into a biological organism that includes a two or three three-dimensional preform that is based on the actual two or three-dimensional structure of a native mammalian tissue; and an electrospinning apparatus, wherein the electrospinning apparatus is operative to deposit at least one layer of polymer fibers on the preform to form a polymer scaffold, and wherein the orientation of the fibers in the scaffold relative to one another is substantially parallel.

An embolization device may include a fiber section having a plurality of polymeric electrospun fibers and, optionally, a contrast agent. An embolization device may further include a plurality of fiber sections, wherein each fiber section is separated by a linker. A method of deploying such an embolization device may include inserting the embolization device into a vessel. The method may further include applying an electrical current to one or more of the linkers, applying electrothermal heat to at least a portion of the device, or applying force to at least a portion of a delivery vehicle for the device. A method of manufacturing the device may include electrospinning a fiber section, and processing the fiber section by straining, twisting, heating, or shaping it.

A biocompatible textile and methods for its use and fabrication are disclosed. The textile may be fabricated from electrospun fibers forming windings on a mandrel, in which the windings form openings having a mesh size between adjacent windings. The textile may also be fabricated by the addition of solvent-soluble particles incorporated into the textile while the windings are formed. Such particles may be removed by exposing the textile to a solvent, thereby dissolving them. Disclosed are also replacements for animal organs composed of material including at least one layer of an electrospun fiber textile having a mesh size. Such replacements for animal organs may include biocompatible textiles treated with a surface treatment process.

A fiber may comprise an electrospun polymer and a contrast agent. Method for generating an electro spun fiber medical implant

A system for manufacturing a synthetic organ suitable for transplantation into a biological organism is provided. This synthetic organ includes a three-dimensional polymer scaffold, wherein the shape and dimensions of the polymer scaffold are based on a native organ, wherein the polymer scaffold further includes at least one layer of polymer fibers that have been deposited by electrospinning, and wherein the orientation of the fibers in the scaffold relative to one another is generally parallel, random, or both; and wherein the polymer scaffold has been preseeded with at least one type of biological cell prior to implantation into a biological organism, and wherein the at least one type of biological cell is operative to facilitate integration of the polymer scaffold into the organism so that the polymer scaffold may function in a manner significantly similar to or the same as the native organ.
