A coated cutting tool includes a substrate of cemented carbide and a coating. The cemented carbide is made of WC and a binder phase of one or more of Co, Fe and Ni. The carbon content in the cemented carbide is a substoichiometric carbon content SCC, wherein &#x2212;0.13 wt %&#x2264;SCC&#x3c;0 wt %, or &#x2212;0.30 wt %&#x2264;SCC&#x2264;&#x2212;0.16 wt %. The coating includes one or more layers being a metal carbide, metal nitride or metal carbonitride, the metal being at least one of Zr and Hf, and wherein Ti is present in an amount of at most 10 at-% of the amount metal. The one or more layers is situated between the substrate and the aluminum oxide layer.

Method of producing a sintered body comprising the steps of mixing one or more powders forming hard constituents with powders forming a binder phase comprising cobalt powder where the cobalt powder comprises cobalt having mainly a fcc-structure defined as the peak height ratio between the Co-fcc(200)/Co-hcp(101) being greater than or equal to about 3/2, as measured between the baseline and maximum peak height, measured by XRD with a 2&#x3b8;/&#x3b8; focusing geometry and Cu-K&#x3b1; radiation. The present invention also relates to a ready-to-press powder comprising cobalt having mainly a fcc-structure and where the cobalt powder has a grain size (FSSS) of from about 0.2 to about 2.9 &#x3bc;m. The present invention also relates to sintered bodies made according to the method. The sintered bodied according to the present invention have reduced porosity and less crack formation.

A coated milling insert particularly useful for milling in low and medium alloyed steels with or without raw surface zones during wet or dry conditions. The insert is characterized by a WC-Co cemented carbide with a low content of cubic carbides and a highly W alloyed binder phase and a coating including an inner layer of TiCNOwith columnar grains, a layer of &#x3ba;-AlOand, preferably, a top layer of TiN. The layers are deposited by using CVD methods.

Coated milling insert and method of making it

A coated milling insert particularly useful for milling in low and medium alloyed steels with or without abrasive surface zones during dry or wet conditions at high cutting speed, and milling hardened steels at high cutting speed. The insert is characterized by a WC-Co cemented carbide with a low content of cubic carbides and a highly W-alloyed binder phase and a coating including an innermost layer of TiC N O with columnar grains and a top layer of TiN and an inner layer of &kgr;-Al O .

A coated cemented carbide cutting tool (indexable inserts) for the wet or dry milling, particularly at high cutting speeds, of stainless steels of different composition and microstructure, but also for the milling of non-stainless steels such as low carbon steels and low and medium alloyed steels is disclosed. The coated WC&minus;Co based cemented carbide insert includes a specific composition range of WC&plus;Co without any addition of cubic carbides by a low W-alloyed Co binder and by a narrow range defined average WC grainsize, and a hard and wear resistant coating including a multilayered structure of sublayers of the composition (Ti,Al,)N with repeated variation of the Ti/Al ratio.
