A reservoir for a cryogenic fluid comprises a vessel with an elongated filling neck. It is thermally insulated by means of a band of thermal insulating material wound around the neck and the vessel in a plurality of superimposed layers each of which has an edge adjacent the neck and an edge remote from the neck. A cord is helically wound around the neck in a plurality of turns. Each turn of the cord contacts the adjacent edge, as defined above, of each layer.

The method comprises winding on a mandrel M a tube 1 having a flattened cross-sectional shape so as to form a helical structure, mounting on the mandrel and the tube a sheet metal cylinder 2, injecting in the tube a fluid under pressure so as to cause the tube to assume, by expansion, the shape of a coiled tube having a circular cross-sectional shape and thereby locally deform the wall of the cylinder in the shape of a helical impression, and fixing the coiled tube to the cylinder so as to produce the sleeve. The container is formed from an outer shell of fibrous material impregnated with resin and an inner wall made of an alloy which has a temperature M.sub.s for reversible martensitic transformation which is higher than or equal to the normal mean temperature at which the container is used. The invention is applicable in particular to containers for storing and transporting gases at pressure higher than four bars.
