Pavement compositions containing increased amounts of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) are described. Addition of polyphosphoric acid (PPA) to pavement compositions containing RAP allows increased RAP content in road pavements while maintaining acceptable properties in the final pavement composition. Methods for producing road pavements containing RAP and PPA are also provided.

Reclaimed asphalt pavement containing polyphosphoric acid modified binder

Polyphosphoric acid compositions having a reduced viscosity compared to neat polyphosphoric acid. The viscosity of the polyphosphoric acid is reduced by combining the polyphosphoric acid with an additive that reduces the viscosity of the polyphosphoric acid composition. In one embodiment, additives that can cause solvation and/or partial neutralization of the polyphosphoric acid without the addition of water may be used. The reduced viscosity polyphosphoric acid may be used, for example, as an additive in asphalts used in road pavements.

Polyphosphoric acid compositions having a reduced viscosity

In a first aspect, bituminous asphalt binder materials which are modified by the addition of crumb rubber or ground tire rubber are described. In a second aspect, the present invention is directed to methods of producing a modified asphalt binder containing crumb rubber or ground tire rubber. The modified asphalt binders comprise neat asphalt, crumb rubber, one or more synthetic polymers, and one or more acids. The crumb rubber may be obtained from recycled truck and/or automobile tires.

The present invention relates to a method for producing a crumb rubber modified asphalt comprising the steps of: a) heating a pre-selected quantity of asphalt to a temperature of between about 325&#xb0; F. to 550&#xb0; F.; b) adding crumb rubber and a mineral acid to the heated asphalt with stirring; and c) blowing air through the asphalt, crumb rubber and mineral acid mixture.

Crumb rubber modified asphalt with improved stability

Asphalt emulsion compositions for use in priming a granular surface such as a road bed are provided. The asphalt emulsion comprises asphalt, an amphoteric emulsifier, and water. The asphalt emulsion priming composition may be used on road beds to prepare the road bed for paving. Application of the asphalt emulsion priming composition to a granular surface, such as a road bed, can provide several advantages, including reducing or eliminating dust generated by traffic on the granular surface.

Asphalt emulsion priming compositions and methods of use

Methods are provided for preparing a bitumen product having improved properties for use in asphalt road paving. In a preferred embodiment, polyphosphoric acid is added to heated bitumen and stirred for a period of time. After addition of the polyphosphoric acid, one or more sulfur-crosslinkable elastomers and one or more sulfur donor coupling agents is added to the heated bitumen and mixed. The polyphosphoric acid, sulfur-crosslinkable elastomers and sulfur donor coupling agents may also be added to separate quantities of bitumen, and the bitumens may be combined prior to use to obtain a final bitumen product having the desired characteristics.

In addition, methods are provided for producing a modified asphalt binder containing crumb rubber or ground tire rubber and a cross-linking agent. The modified asphalt binders comprise neat asphalt, crumb rubber, one or more acids and a cross-linking agent. Optionally, the modified asphalt binder may include one or more polymer additives. The crumb rubber may be obtained from recycled truck and/or automobile tires. The addition of crumb rubber in asphalt binders can improve the consistency and properties of the asphalt binders at high and low temperatures. In particular, the modified asphalt binders of the present invention exhibit improved elastic behavior, resulting in improved performance of roads or other surfaces paved using the modified asphalt binder. Road resistance to permanent deformation, fatigue cracking and thermal cracking is improved by use of the modified asphalt binder.

Modified asphalt binder material using crosslinked crumb rubber and methods of manufacturing the modified asphalt binder

The invention concerns a bitumen emulsion-based surfacing composition or bituminous mix consisting of an amphoteric surfactant and its use in road highway engineering for making materials for new roads, for reinforcing or maintaining old roads or for punctually repairing same.
