Systems and methods are provided for effectuating a filtering technique that can enable available bandwidth (e.g., on a network path) to be estimated in the presence of moderate losses caused by certain queue management techniques. When packet losses exist on a network path due to certain types of packet queue transmission mechanisms, methods, or models, a bump detection algorithm (BDA) can be used to perform bandwidth estimation. When a pattern of packet loss is identified (from its signature) as being one with which BDA can be performed to accurately estimate available bandwidth on a network path, the BDA-based bandwidth estimate may be used to place/route and load balance network traffic, or otherwise used to engage in network traffic engineering, take other network-related action(s), or reported out. Otherwise, the bandwidth estimation is suppressed and not used.

Bandwidth estimate filtering based on packet loss patterns

A system maintains a queue for storing packets, which are enqueued at a tail of the queue and dequeued at a head of the queue. The system computes a queue utilization value, based on the packets stored in the queue. The system computes an excess amount value, based on the packets stored in the queue and previously tagged as excess packets. The system receives a first packet at the tail of the queue and determines whether a difference between the queue utilization value and the excess amount value exceeds a predetermined threshold. Responsive to determining that the difference exceeds the predetermined threshold, the system tags the first packet as an excess packet. Responsive to tagging the first packet as an excess packet, the system performs an operation associated with the first packet or a second packet at the head of the queue to reduce congestion.

Systems and methods are provided for available network bandwidth estimation using a one-way-delay noise filter with bump detection. The method includes receiving one-way delay measurements for each probe packet in a probe train sent over the telecommunications path; grouping the probe packets into a plurality of pairs based on the one-way delay measurements; for each pair, computing a respective noise threshold based on the one-way delay measurements of all the probe packets transmitted after a later-transmitted probe packet of the pair; selecting one of the pairs according to the noise thresholds and the one-way delay measurements for the probe packets of the pairs; and estimating the available bandwidth on the telecommunications path based on transmission times of the probe packets in the selected pair.

Systems and methods are provided for measuring available bandwidth available in a black box network by determining a probing rate of packet transmissions between a sender and receiver. The optimal probing rate and bandwidth estimate may be determined. Additional actions may be performed, like automatically rerouting packets and/or load balancing network traffic after the probing rate is determined.

Determination of an inflection point in congestion in a network path can include determining packet congestion on a network path using an inflection point mechanism (IPDM), detecting a potential inflection point in response to a one-way delay (OWD) of a first packet being lesser than an OWD of a second packet by a quantity greater than a function of a difference of inter departure time (IDT) between the first packet and the second packet, and determining an inflection point in congestion of the network path based on the potential inflection point.

Systems and methods are provided for a new type of quality of service (QoS) primitive at a network device that has better performance than traditional QoS primitives. The QoS primitive may comprise a token bucket with active queue management (TBAQM). Particularly, the TBAQM may receive a data packet that is processed by the token bucket; adjust tokens associated with the token bucket, where the tokens are added based on a configured rate and subtracted in association with processing the data packet; determine a number of tokens associated with the token bucket, comprising: when the token bucket has zero tokens, initiating a first action with the data packet, and when the token bucket has more than zero tokens, determining a marking probability based on the number of tokens and initiating a second action based on the marking probability.

An optical network includes top networking ports coupled to a packet switch, first media converters, second media converters, and bottom networking ports. The first media converters are coupled to top networking ports, each of the first media converters including a first ASIC transceiver that has a circuit switch function. The second media converters are coupled to the first media converter via optical cables to receive the optical signals. Each of the second media converters includes a second ASIC transceiver that has a circuit switch function. The bottom networking ports are coupled to the second media converters. The first ASIC transceiver and the second ASIC transceiver are configured to transmit a signal from one of the top networking ports to any one of the bottom networking ports, and transmit a signal from one of the bottom networking ports to any one of the top networking ports.

Systems and methods are provided for performing burst packet preloading for Available Bandwidth (ABW) estimation, that may include: preparing a chirp train to be used for ABW estimation, the chirp train comprising a quantity of original probe packets; determining a quantity of additional probe packets that will transition the network path from a short-term mode into a long-term mode; inserting the determined quantity of additional probe packets at the beginning of the chirp train; and transmitting the chirp train, including the determined quantity of additional probe packets on the network path, to a receiver that can perform ABW estimation of the network path.

A received time for a first subset of the train of probe packets is measured. A change in capacity of the network path is determined based on the measured received time for the first subset of packets. An estimated available bandwidth is computed based on the second subset of packets from the train of probe packets.

A network transmission delay for at least two packets from the train of probe packets is measured. Network congestion is estimated utilizing the at least two packets from the train of probe packets. An estimated available bandwidth is computed based on the network transmission and estimated network congestion. One or more network transmission characteristics are modified based on the estimated available bandwidth.

Techniques and architectures for measuring available bandwidth. A train of probe packets is received from a remote electronic device. A per-packet one-way delay (OWD) is calculated for at least two packets from the train of probe packets. An OWD threshold value is calculated based on the calculated OWD for the at least two packets from the train of probe packets. A packet pair is selected from the train of probe packets based on the per-packet OWD for each packet in the packet pair exceeding the OWD threshold value. An estimated available bandwidth is computed based on one or more transmission characteristics of the selected packet pair.
