A device for treating human keratinous materials includes an electrical appliance comprising a handpiece and a reader, and an applicator suitable for being removably fastened on the handpiece. The applicator includes a solid cosmetic or dermatological composition for applying to the keratinous materials, and/or an applicator element including fibers and/or cells suitable for enabling a cosmetic or dermatological composition to be applied on keratinous materials. The applicator also includes an encoder for encoding information arranged to be read by the reader. The operation of the handpiece depends on the information read.

The device comprises: a high frequency alternating voltage generator the output of which is connected to a sensor probe 5 which is to be applied to a substrate to be measured, an amplifier the input of which is connected to the sensor probe, and a detector arranged to furnish a D.C. voltage signal based on the output from amplifier. The generator, the amplifier and the detector are located inside a metal envelope enclosure. An electromagnetic radiation shield is disposed inside the envelope to separate the amplifier and the detector from the high frequency generator. In operation, voltage output from the detector is indicative of the electrical impedance of the substrate as sensed at the probe. In the preferred application, the substrate is skin and the measured electrical impedance is indicative of the water content of the skin.

An apparatus for measuring the consistency or hardness of a material, for example skin tissue on a living body, comprises a support to be applied against the material to be tested and a feeler movably carried by the support for displacement through a distance which will be proportional to the hardness or consistency being measured. To avoid the need for careful positioning of the device on the test material with a carefully constant bearing pressure, a control circuit is provided for recording the displacement of the feeler only when the bearing pressure of the support on the test material has a predetermined value. The reading of the displacement is held and is preferably digital. Application of the support successively to different points on the test material will enable a true comparison of the readings at the various points.
