A valved nasal cannula adapted to provide a positive pressure in the airway using the breathing of the intended user as a source of positive pressure without the need for an external source of energy and/or compressed air. The cannula is designed so as to be relatively easily insertable and retractable into and from the nasal vestibule portion of the nose of the intended user without requiring manual dexterity.

Valved nasal cannula

A breathing assistance apparatus includes an inner volumetric member pressurizable from a first pressure to a second pressure and an outer volumetric member surrounding at least a portion of the inner expandable volumetric member. The inner volumetric member pressurizes the outer volumetric member as the inner volumetric member is pressurized from the first pressure to the second pressure. In another embodiment, a breathing assistance apparatus includes exhalation and inhalation chambers with respective biasing members providing for the exhalation chamber to apply a pressure to the inhalation chamber and thereby provide assisted inhalation. Methods for assisting breathing are also provided.

Breathing apparatus and method for the use thereof

A nasal cannula includes a cannula body having a passageway extending therethrough from a first end to a second end and an airflow restrictor coupled to the cannula body and positioned to selectively restrict air flow through the passageway during exhalation. A flow regulator is settable to a plurality of airflow positions and cooperates with the airflow restrictor to regulate the air flow during exhalation such that the air flow during exhalation is variable in response to the airflow position of the flow regulator. In one embodiment, an airflow restrictor is deformable from an at-rest configuration to an inhalation configuration during inhalation, and exerts a substantially constant backpressure during exhalation for a predetermined range of expiration flow rate. Methods of use are also provided.

Nasal cannula

A valved nasal cannula () insertable in a nose of an intended user () and usable to selectively restrict a flow of air flowing through the valved nasal cannula (), the nose having a nostril () defining a nostril inlet () and a nostril vestibule () extending inwardly into the nose from the nostril inlet), the valved nasal cannula () comprising: &#x2014;a cannula body (), the cannula body () defining a cannula passageway () extending therethrough, the cannula passageway () defining a passageway longitudinal axis (), the cannula body () also defining a cannula proximal end () and a substantially longitudinally opposed cannula distal end (), the cannula body () being, at least in part, insertable in the nostril with the cannula proximal end () positioned inside the nostril vestibule () substantially spaced apart from the nostril inlet () and the cannula distal end () positioned substantially adjacent the nostril inlet; &#x2014;a valve operatively coupled to the cannula body () for selectively restricting the flow of air through the cannula passageway (); and &#x2014;a protective grid (), the protective grid () extending from the cannula body () across the cannula passageway (), the protective grid () being located closer to the cannula proximal end () than the valve.

A nasal filter positionable within a nostril having a nasal vestibule merging with a nasal passage of reduced cross-sectional dimension relative to the nasal vestibule. The filter comprises an elongated cylindrical body of resilient synthetic spongy material which yields upon radial compression to assume a compressed cylindrical form of reduced, substantially uniform diameter permitting insertion into the nasal passage. The body has a length sufficient to extend through the nasal vestibule and into at least a portion of the nasal passage. The body further has a cross-sectional dimension when uncompressed such that when the filter has been inserted in the nostril and the spongy material has expanded radially, the body snugly fits within the nasal vestibule and causes an enlargement of the nasal passage.
