A process for the production of polypropylene fibrids of short length by abrupt expansion of a liquid mixture of molten polypropylene, an alkane solvent for the polypropylene, and a minor amount of a non-solvent for the polypropylene. The mixture, which is at a high temperature and high pressure, is ejected through an expansion orifice to instantaneously vaporize the alkane and to solidify the polypropylene.

Process for the production of polypropylene fibrids

Polyolefine-based fibrids are produced by the abrupt expansion of a liquid mixture of molten polyolefine and solvent, this mixture being at high temperature and high pressure. The mixture contains the solvent, a polyolefine of normal molecular weight and a polyolefine of low molecular weight onto which a polar monomer has been grafted. The fibrids obtained possess a high proportion of grafted polyolefine on their surface.

The invention relates to a permeable diaphragm for an electrochemical cell. The diaphragm consists of a sheet of fibrous, organic polymeric material, obtained from a suspension of the said polymeric material in an organic liquid. The invention applies to permeable diaphragms for cells for the electrolysis of aqueous sodium chloride solutions.

A process is provided for the manufacture of fibrils of short length by suddenly releasing the pressure acting on a two-phase liquid mixture of molten polymer and solvent and which is at a high pressure and a high temperature. The two-phase liquid mixture is ejected through a pressure release orifice so as to vaporize the solvent instantaneously and solidify the polymer, and the flow path of the two-phase liquid mixture is perturbed at the instant when it enters the pressure release orifice. Spinnerets are provided which have a perturbation chamber containing a supply orifice and a pressure release orifice.
