The present invention relates to the use of bis-anhydrohexitol ethers as reactive diluents in a crosslinkable resin, adhesive, coating or composite matrix composition. Not only do these products make it possible to advantageously reduce the viscosity of the mixtures obtained, but they also lead to a very small reduction in the glass transition temperature of the crosslinked mixtures, compared to other reactive diluents, while spectacularly improving the mechanical properties of the latter such as the Young's modulus, the tensile strength, the elongation at break and the toughness.

The invention concerns a method for producing a polyester containing at least one 1,4:3,6-dianhydrohexitol unit comprising: &#x2022;a step of introducing, into a reactor, monomers comprising at least one monomer (A) that is a diacid or a diester and at least one monomer (B) that is a 1,4:3,6-dianhydrohexitol; &#x2022;a step of introducing, into the reactor, a catalytic system comprising either a catalyst comprising the element germanium and a catalyst comprising the element aluminum, or a catalyst comprising the elements germanium and aluminum, or a mixture of said two catalysts; &#x2022;a step of polymerizing said monomers to form the polyester; &#x2022;a step of recovering a polyester composition comprising the polyester and the catalytic system. The invention also concerns a polyester composition containing a catalytic system comprising either a catalyst comprising the element germanium and a catalyst comprising the element aluminum, or a catalyst comprising the elements germanium and aluminum, or a mixture of said two catalysts, and the use of same to reduce the coloring of the polyester.

The invention relates to a polymerisable liquid mixture comprising: (a) a polymerisable thermosetting composition which is a precursor by polymerization of a first thermoset polymer material, said composition containing at least one polythiol and/or one polyol, preferably a polythiol, and at least one polyiso(thio)cyanate; and (b) a second polymer material solubilized in the aforementioned polymerisable thermosetting composition, whereby the second material (i) contains at least one block copolymer comprising at least two polymer blocks A and B, namely an elastomer block A and a hydrophilic block B, and, following polymerization of the polymerisable mixture, (ii) forms domains which are rich in elastomer block A and which are dispersed throughout the first material, said domains being smaller than 80 nanometers and preferably smaller than 50 nanometers. The invention also relates to a transparent article having improved toughness, which is produced by means of polymerization of the above-mentioned polymerisable mixture, comprising an alloy of a first thermoset polymer material forming the matrix of said article and of a second polymer material which is dispersed throughout said first material. The aforementioned articles have improved resistance to impact and to crack propagation. The invention is suitable for use in ophthalmic optics.

Thermosetting poly(thio)urethane formulation comprising at least one block copolymer and use thereof in optics for the production of organic lenses having improved toughness

The object of the invention is a process for molding an optical element such as a lens (). According to the invention, the element is obtained by a reaction injection molding process comprising the steps of mixing at least two polymerizing reactants and forcing the obtained reacting mixture by an injection duct () for filling under pressure a scaled mold cavity () having an entry side () provided with a casting opening () and an evacuation side () and providing a laminated flow of mixture in a spout () having a progressive enlarging transversal section between the outlet opening () of the injection duct () and the casting opening () of the mold cavity (), for avoiding any turbulent area in said laminated flow, said evacuation side () being provided with means () for evacuating air contained in the mixture during mold filling. The invention also covers the molding installation adapted for using such a process.

The present invention relates to a thermoset material with improved impact resistance comprising, by weight: &#x2022;99 to 20% of a thermoset resin, &#x2022;1 to 80% of an impact modifier comprising at least one copolymer chosen from copolymers comprising A-B-C and A-B blocks, in which: each block is connected to the other by means of a covalent bond or of an intermediate molecule connected to one of the blocks via a covalent bond and to the other block via another covalent bond, A is a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and of at least one water-soluble monomer, C is either (i) a PMMA (homopolymer or copolymer) this PMMA comprising optionally a water-soluble monomer or (ii) a polymer based on vinyl monomers or mixture of vinyl monomers, B is incompatible or partially compatible with the thermoset resin and incompatible with the A block and the optional C block and its glass transition temperature Tg is less than the operating temperature of the thermoset material. The invention also relates to the use of these impact modifiers in thermosets.

Thermoset materials with improved impact resistance

The invention concerns a thermosetting elastomer composition based on modified polycyanurate with improved thermal resistance obtainable by a polymerization method in the presence of a catalyst (D) of a mixture comprising at least: (A) a cyanate, (B) a block copolymer consisting of: a) at least a central block (B1) non-miscible with the cyanate and sufficiently long to provide the composition with elastomeric character; and b) at least two terminal blocks (B2) located on each side of the central block and comprising groups reactive with the cyanate, each of the blocks (B2) being sufficiently long to be miscible with the cyanate; and (C) a mineral filler reactive with the cyanate, in proportions such that the ratio r is not less than 5, but remains less than a threshold value to avoid phase inversion, said method comprising steps which consist in: I) mixing (A), (B), (C) and (D) until a homogeneous mixture is obtained at a temperature higher than the melting point of (A) and of (B) but lower than about 130&#xb0; C.; II) polymerizing the mixture at a temperature ranging between about 130 and about 170&#xb0; C.; III) post-curing the polymerized mixture at a temperature not lower than about 200&#xb0; C. to complete the reaction; the values of dsrupt and of derupt of the resulting composition being not more than +&#x2212;30%. The invention also concerns the method for preparing said composition and its use.

Thermosetting elastomer composition based on modified polycyanurate with improved thermal resistance

The present invention relates to a thermoset material with improved impact resistance comprising: S is advantageously polystyrene and B polybutadiene. The thermoset resin advantageously originates from the reaction of a thermosetting epoxy resin and of a hardener.

The invention relates to thermosetting compositions, in particular coating or molding compositions, comprising crosslinked polymer microparticles with a size ranging from 10 to 300 nm and carrying at least one reactive functional group which can react with at least one of the reactive components of the thermosetting composition. Preferably, these microparticles carry at least one second reactive functional group distinct from the first which can react with at least one other functional group of the same type carried by another microparticle and/or by a reactive component of the thermosetting composition. These microparticles are at least partially soluble, miscible and/or dispersible in the starting thermosetting composition. The preferred thermosetting compositions are based on resins of epoxy/amine type or on unsaturated polyester resins and/or on vinyl ester resins. The coatings or molded items obtained exhibit very good mechanical, thermal and chemical strength resulting from the presence of these microparticles.

A method for producing thermosetting polyurethaneafter transformation from thermoplastic polyurethane with a hydrolyzable organo-silane which is grafted onto macromolecules of said thermoplastic polyurethane by means of a bonding agent. Said organo-silane has general formula (I), wherein R,R,R=aliphatic alkyl, aromatic alkyl; n&#x3e;1; R4 is an organic radical which can react with said bonding agent which comprises at least two isocyanate functions and the thermoplastic polyurethane obtained can, after transformation, become automatically cross-linked by coming into contact with water molecules in order to become thermosetting.
