An apparatus comprising: a membrane with a first side, a second side, and a pore that extends through the membrane; a processing system including a processor; and a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processing system, facilitate performance of operations, the operations comprising: electronic sensing of an electrical characteristic associated with a translocation of a test DNA through the pore, resulting in a sensed electrical characteristic; comparing the sensed electrical characteristic with a plurality of reference electrical characteristics, wherein each of the plurality of reference electrical characteristics is associated with a respective one of a plurality of reference features, and wherein the comparing results in a comparison result; and determining, based upon the comparison result, with which of the plurality of reference features a feature of the test DNA corresponds. Classification of epigenetic biomarkers and/or DNA conformational superstructures via use of atomically thin nanopores

The present disclosure provides systems and methods that can provide portable, real-time accessible DNA memories. An example DNA-based data storage system includes a loading region configured to receive a plurality of DNA-based data storage elements in a suspension fluid and a plurality of microtubes disposed in a capture/release region. The microtubes are configured to capture and release the DNA-based data storage elements. The DNA-based data storage system also includes a linearization region configured to linearize the DNA-based data storage elements and a readout region with a readout device configured to provide information indicative of the respective DNA-based data storage elements.

On-chip nanoscale storage system using chimeric DNA

Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, an apparatus comprising: a dielectric substrate; a plurality of membranes positioned upon the dielectric substrate, wherein each of the plurality of membranes has a first side and a second side, wherein each of the plurality of membranes has a pore disposed therein, wherein each pore extends through each respective membrane from the first side of the respective membrane to the second side of the respective membrane, wherein each pore is associated with a corresponding hole that extends through the dielectric substrate, and wherein each of the plurality of membranes is not in direct contact with any other of the plurality of membranes; and a plurality of electrode pairs, wherein each of the plurality of electrode pairs is in contact with a single respective one of the plurality of membranes. Parallel DNA detection by solid-state multi-pore systems and associated methods

This disclosure relates to semiconductor quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). A three-terminal QCL device is disclosed. The three-terminal QCL device includes a unipolar multi-period quantum cascade laser structure embedded in a bipolar structure having three terminals providing at least two independently controllable biases to the QCL device for adjusting the lasing intensity and for tuning the lasing wavelength of the QCL device. The three-terminal QCL device further includes a quantum impedance matching structure for achieving high efficiency carrier injection and lowering lasing threshold. In addition, the multi-period quantum cascade laser structure is selectively doped to provide near charge neutrality during operation. The three-terminal QCL may further be controlled to achieve simultaneous dual- or multi-color lasing.

Quantum impedance matching for carrier injection in tunable transistor-injected quantum cascade lasers

Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, an apparatus including a material having one or more atomic layers with two or less degrees of freedom for motion of charges in the material, and a gate coupled to the material for controlling charge concentration of the material. The material can have constricted sides, a first through-hole, and a first port and a second port for conduction of charges in the material. The gate can have a second through-hole that is at least partially aligned with the first through-hole. A first voltage potential can be applied to the first port and the second port, along with a second voltage potential applied to the gate which adjusts the charge concentration of the material. A sensor can be used to measure a change in electrical properties of the material caused by a target material traversing the first through-hole of the material. Additional embodiments are disclosed.

Method and apparatus analyzing a target material

Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, an apparatus having a material having a through-hole, a gate coupled to the material for controlling a charge concentration of the material, a sensor, and a controller coupled to the material, the gate and the sensor. The controller can perform operations including applying a first voltage potential to the material to induce a flow of current in the material, applying a second voltage potential to the gate to adjust the charge concentration of the material, and receiving sensing data from the sensor responsive to a change in electrical properties of the material caused by a target traversing the first through-hole of the material. The through-hole causes a plurality of structural portions of the target to be misaligned with a direction of the flow current in the material. Additional embodiments are disclosed.

Method and apparatus for analyzing a target material

A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a solid-state selector having a vessel for carrying a liquid medium with one or more molecules surrounded by ions, a solid state conductive structure doped with impurities having one or more through-holes extending between two surfaces of the solid state conductive structure positioned within the liquid medium of the vessel, a voltage source coupled to the solid state conductive structure to selectively stimulate the ions surrounding the one or more molecules to pass through the one or more through-holes. The disclosed invention utilizes a homojunction tunneling mechanism of injection into the channel of a modulation doped field effect transistor. The onset of negative differential resistance can be controlled via the gate of the field effect transistor. In one embodiment there is homojunction tunneling within a bipolar field effect structure.
