A hair fixative composition comprising a film forming polymer that is prepared from monomers comprising (a) 10-30% by weight of one or more copolymerizable comonomers selected from the group consisting of N-alkyl (meth)acrylamide wherein the alkyl group thereof contains from 2 to 12 carbon atoms, wherein for at least one of said copolymerizable comonomers the alkyl group contains from 5 to 12 carbon atoms; (b) 14-21% by weight of copolymerizable comonomers comprising acrylic acid and optionally one or more acidic copolymerizable comonomers selected from the group consisting of methacrylic acid, crotonic acid, itaconic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, and the (C-C)alkyl half esters of maleic and fumaric acids; and (c) 40-76% by weight two or more copolymerizable comonomers selected from the group consisting of (C-C)alkyl(meth)acrylates, wherein at least one of said two or more copolymerizable comonomers is a (C-C)alkyl(meth)acrylate; said film forming polymer being optionally completely or partially neutralized with a basic reagent.

Acrylic hair fixative copolymers and compositions

Ethanol soluble or dispersible polyetheramide polymers that have a percent elongation to break of less than 100%. The polymers are formed from a reaction mixture comprising at least one or more poly(alkyleneoxy)diamines and one or more diacids. The reaction mixture can optionally include one or more aliphatic diamines in addition to the one or more poly(alkyleneoxy)diamines. The polyetheramide polymers have application in personal care compositions such as hair fixative compositions, for example, hair spray formulations.

Polyetheramide compositions

Ethanol soluble or dispersible polyetheramide polymers that have a percent elongation to break of less than 100%. The polymers are formed from a reaction mixture comprising at least one or more poly(alkyleneoxy) diamines and one or more diacids. The reaction mixture can optionally include one or more aliphatic diamines in addition to the one or more poly(alkyleneoxy) diamines. The polyetheramide polymers have application in personal care compositions such as hair fixative compositions, for example, hair spray formulations.

Methods for making polymers from N-vinyl acetamide monomer

The present invention is directed to precipitation polymerization processes for the manufacture of polymers prepared from N-vinyl formamide monomer, the processes including the steps of contacting the N-vinyl formamide monomer with a polymerization medium containing t-butanol as diluent and a free-radical initiator, under conditions effective to polymerize the N-vinyl formamide monomer, thereby forming a precipitate of the polymer in the polymerization medium, substantially isolating the precipitated polymer from the polymerization medium, contacting the substantially isolated polymer with a wash containing a different diluent than the t-butanol used in the polymerization and isolating the washed polymer from the wash.

The present invention relates to hair fixative compositions which utilize as the hair fixative resin a polymer which is prepared from N-vinyl formamide (NVF). The polymer may be a homopolymer of NVF or an interpolymer of NVF and at least one vinyl monomer(s). The polymer is present in amounts effective to provide the inventive hair fixative compositions with hair fixative properties. In preferred embodiments, the hair fixative composition is a stable, aqueous gel which forms a clear, non-tacky film upon drying. In certain embodiments, the gel has a rheology effective to allow the gel to be applied to the hair via a spray pump.
