An upsetting method for working a metal slug of cylindrical shape and provided with a coating is disclosed. The slug is placed, lengthwise, in a sleeve the internal wall of which leaves a space with respect to the lateral surface of the slug, the slug and sleeve assembly is placed in an upsetting container, and an upsetting force is exerted on the slug on at least one of its transverse surfaces until a determined slenderness ratio has been obtained, and the slug is separated from the sleeve. The slug is upset continuously but only the slug is upset because of the space formed by the internal wall of the sleeve. The material of the sleeve, for example made of steel, is not welded or seized to the slug, which means that it need not be machined in order to separate the two after the operation.

The invention relates to an upsetting method for working a metal slug having a determined slenderness, characterized by the fact that the slug is at least partly positioned in the direction of its length, in an upsetting pot in a cylindrical housing provided for this purpose, and pressure is exerted on the slug in the direction of its length by means of a punch, until the slug fills the whole section of the housing, so as to reduce its slenderness, and to obtain a cylindrical slug with a section equal to that of the housing, in preparation for a forging operation. By this method, it is possible to upset slugs with large slenderness.

This present invention concerns a process for the heating of a forging machine tool, including an insert holder and an insert with one free face bearing a forging impression, in preparation for a forging operation in the said forging machine. The process is characterised by the fact that the insert holder includes a furnace element that has at least one burner and one flue for removal of the gases, forming, with the said face of the insert, a closed heating chamber, the said chamber being heated until the insert reaches a given temperature, when the furnace element is removed. The invention also covers the forging tool, including an insert with an impression, mounted in an insert holder, for implementation of the process, and a removable furnace element.

The invention relates to a forging press of the hot-die type with an operating temperature above a temperature T, comprising two dies between two die support elements, a thermal insulation means being placed between each die and its support element. The press is characterized in that the said means comprises at least two superposed layers (A, B), a first layer (A) comprising a first material having mechanical and thermal properties suitable for operation at a temperature above the temperature T, a second layer (B) comprising a second material having mechanical and thermal properties suitable for operating at a temperature below the temperature T, the thermal conductivity of which is lower than that of the first material and is approximately equal to 0.2 W/m&#xb7;K, with a tolerance of 10%. Thanks to the invention, it is possible to obtain an effective thermal insulation means of small thickness.
