Various embodiments disclosed relate to electrocatalytic hydrogenation of muconic acid and polymers formed from the reaction products thereof. In various embodiments, the present invention provides an electrocatalytic method to prepare 3-hexene-1,6-dioic acid, 2-hexene-1,6-dioic acid, adipic acid, or a combination thereof, from muconic acid. The method includes passing current through a catalytic cathode in a reactor including an aqueous acidic solution including muconic acid, a supporting electrolyte, and an anode, so as to generate atomic hydrogen on the cathode surface in an amount effective to hydrogenate the muconic acid to yield a product including 3-hexene-1,6-dioic acid, 2-hexene-1,6-dioic acid, adipic acid, or a mixture thereof. Also disclosed is the polymerization of 3-hexene-1,6-dioic acid, 2-hexene-1,6-dioic acid, or a combination thereof with another compound, such as a diamine or a dialcohol, to form a polymer, such as a polyamide or a polyester.

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation of muconic acid

Various embodiments disclosed relate to electrochemical isomerization of muconic acid. In various embodiments, the present invention provides a method to prepare trans,trans-muconic acid. The method can include passing current through a catalytic cathode in a reactor including an aqueous acidic solution including cis,trans-muconic acid, a supporting electrolyte, and an anode, so as to isomerize the cis,trans-muconic acid to yield a product including trans trans-muconic acid.

Electrochemical isomerization of muconic acid

Various embodiments disclosed relate to isomerization of muconic acid. In various embodiments, the present invention provides a method of forming trans,trans-muconic acid. The method includes heating a starting material composition to form a product composition including trans,trans-muconic acid. The starting material composition includes cis,cis-muconic acid, cis,trans-muconic acid, or a combination thereof. The starting material composition also includes an electrophilic compound, an organic solvent, or a combination thereof.

Isomerization of muconic acid

The present invention relates to the electrolytic splitting of water using a carbon-supported manganese oxide (MnO) composite. Specifically, the present electrolytic splitting of water is carried under neutral electrolyte conditions with a high electrolytic activity, while using an oxygen evolution reaction (OER)-electrode comprising the present carbon-supported MnOcomposite. Next, the present invention relates to a process for producing such a carbon-supported MnOcomposite as well as to a composite obtainable by the present process for producing the same and to an OER-electrode comprising the carbon-supported MnOcomposite obtainable by the present process.
