A nanoparticle, which has a metal oxide core and a cerium shell is provided. The weight ratio of the cerium within the shell to the metal oxide in the core is at least 1%. Additionally a method for delivering a ligand into a cell with the nanoparticle is provided. Processes for making the nanoparticle which include: sonicating an aqueous composition containing Ceric Ammonium Nitrate and a prefabricated nano particle suspension; and (b) adding a polycationic polymer to the mixture (for NP surface functionalization), are also described.

Magnetic inorganic iron-based nanoparticles

Surface-modified polymer films for coating are provided, wherein the surface is modified by covalent binding of nano- or micro-particles comprising a photoreactive species. The surface of the polymer film, e.g. a parylene film, may be modified by covalent binding of nano- or micro-particles of a polymer, e.g. a conductive bifunctional polymer further comprising a chemically reactive functional group, or of a hybrid organic-inorganic oxide, e.g., silica, network comprising a photoreactive species. Further provided are: (i) polymerizable monomers, the conductive bifunctional polymers obtained therefrom; (ii) a hybrid photoreactive organic-inorganic oxide network; and (iii) micro- or nano-particles made from (i) or (ii).

Surface-modified polymer films

Provided are novel polymerizable monomers allowing preparation of exceptionally useful surface coatings by polymerization. Embodiments include highly reticulated chiral nanoparticles useful, for example, for covalently grating biological ligands, epitaxial growth of conductive polymers onto surface modified indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes and arrays of gold nanodots and electroconductive polymers.

Electroconductive polymers

A micro-circuit for performing analyses of multimolecular interactions and for performing molecular syntheses, comprising: (a) a support; (b) at least one micro-electrode attached to the support, the micro-electrode being selectively electronically activated and the micro-electrode having a protective layer which is removable; (c) a binding entity for attachment to the at least one micro-electrode, the binding entity being capable of attachment to at least one micro-electrode when the protective layer has been removed; and (d) a power source being operatively connected to at least one micro-electrode for electronically activating at least one micro-electrode. The micro-circuit of the present invention also includes embodiments featuring a micro-circuit reader for detecting the interaction of the binding entity to a complementary probe, as well as methods for making and using the micro-circuit of the present invention.
