A heat transfer label and method for preparing same, the heat transfer label including (a) a support portion and (b) a transfer portion over the support portion, for transfer of the transfer portion from the support portion to an article upon application of heat to the support portion while the transfer portion is placed into contact with the article. The transfer portion includes at least a protective lacquer layer, an ink layer, and an adhesive layer, wherein at least one of the protective lacquer layer, the ink layer, and the adhesive layer is UV-curable. Further, the heat transfer label may additionally include a tie-coat layer, which may be a UV-curable tie-coat layer. Further, each of the plurality of layers of the transfer portion of the heat transfer label may be UV-curable.

A heat-transfer label assembly and method of using the same. In one embodiment, the assembly is well-suited for decorating refillable glass articles and includes a support portion, a wax skim coat, and a transfer portion. The support portion may include a carrier web overcoated with a polyethylene layer. The wax skim coat may overcoat the polyethylene layer. The transfer portion may include a protective lacquer, an ink design, and a heat-activatable adhesive. The protective lacquer may be printed directly on the skim coat and may include a cross-linked phenoxy resin. The ink design may be printed onto the protective lacquer and may include a binder, a colorant, and a cross-linking system. The adhesive, which may differ from the ink design only by lacking colorant, may be printed onto the ink design, any exposed portions of the protective lacquer, and the surrounding skim coat.

Heat-transfer label assembly and method of using the same

A heat-transfer label assembly and method of using the same. In one embodiment, the assembly is adapted for decorating glass articles and comprises a carrier, the carrier comprising a paper substrate overcoated with a layer of polyethylene. The polyethylene layer is overcoated with a skim coat of wax. One or more heat-transfer labels are printed onto the skim coat and are spaced apart from one another. Each label consists of one or more ink design layers, each ink design layer comprising a binder resin, a pigment, a cross-linking resin and a catalyst. The catalyst is capable of causing the cross-linking resin to cross-link the binder resin within 1-2 minutes after the label has been transferred to a glass article that has been preheated to a temperature of about 250&#xb0; F.-325&#xb0; F.

A heat-transfer label that may be used, for example, to decorate clear glass articles in such a way as to give such articles the appearance of having been frosted. In a preferred embodiment, the label includes (a) a support portion in the form of a sheet of paper overcoated with a release layer of polyethylene, (b) a skim coat of wax overcoated onto the polyethylene release layer and (c) a transfer portion, the transfer portion including a protective lacquer layer printed onto the skim coat, an ink layer printed onto the protective lacquer layer, and an adhesive layer printed onto the ink layer, as well as onto any exposed portions of the underlying protective lacquer layer and onto a surrounding area of the skim coat. The protective lacquer layer comprises a solvent-soluble phenoxy resin that has been cross-linked by a melamine resin. The ink layer comprises a design printed with a frosted ink, the frosted ink preferably comprising a solvent-soluble phenoxy resin, a silica and a colorant. The adhesive layer comprises a phenoxy resin of the type present in a water-based phenoxy resin dispersion.

A heat-transfer label suitable for use in decorating polyethylene-coated glass articles. In a preferred embodiment, the label is capable of withstanding pasteurization conditions on a polyethylene-coated glass article and includes (a) a support portion in the form of a sheet of paper overcoated with a release layer of polyethylene, (b) a skim coat of wax overcoated onto the polyethylene release layer and (c) a transfer portion, the transfer portion including a cross-linked phenoxy protective lacquer layer printed onto the skim coat, a polyester ink layer printed onto the protective lacquer layer, a first adhesive layer printed onto the ink layer and onto any exposed portions of the underlying protective lacquer layer, and a second adhesive layer printed onto the first adhesive layer. The first adhesive layer preferably comprises an acrylic adhesive resin of the type present in a water-based adhesive dispersion or in a water-based adhesive emulsion and also comprises a surfactant in the form of dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate. The second adhesive layer preferably comprises a chlorinated polyolefin of the type present in a water-based chlorinated polyolefin dispersion, such a dispersion having a pH at 25.degree. C. of 9-10 and containing 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol as a neutralizing amine, the water-based chlorinated polyolefin dispersion containing 20%, by weight, chlorinated polyolefin and 25%, by weight, total solids. The second adhesive layer preferably also comprises a thickener in the form of a polyurethane.

Heat-transfer label and method of decorating polyethylene-coated glass

A heat-transfer label well-suited for use in decorating silane-treated glass articles. In a preferred embodiment, the label exhibits good scuff resistance, is capable of withstanding pasteurization conditions on a silane-treated glass article and includes (a) a support portion in the form of a sheet of paper overcoated with a release layer of polyethylene, (b) a skim coat of wax overcoated onto the polyethylene release layer and (c) a transfer portion, the transfer portion including a cross-linked phenoxy protective lacquer layer printed onto the skim coat, a polyester ink layer printed onto the protective lacquer layer, and an adhesive layer printed onto the ink layer, as well as onto any exposed portions of the underlying protective lacquer layer and onto a surrounding area of the skim coat. The cross-linked phenoxy resin comprises a solvent-soluble phenoxy resin of the formula ##STR1## wherein the solvent-soluble phenoxy resin is cross-linked by a melamine formaldehyde resin. The adhesive layer comprises a phenoxy resin of the type present in a water-based phenoxy resin dispersion. The adhesive layer is preferably made by gravure printing onto its underlying layers an adhesive composition comprising the water-based phenoxy resin dispersion, isopropyl alcohol and water, and then evaporating the volatile components of the composition to leave an adhesive phenoxy film.

A heat-transfer label including a novel acrylic adhesive layer. In a preferred embodiment, the label is used in decorating polyethylene-coated glass articles subjected to pasteurization conditions and includes (a) a support portion in the form of a sheet of paper overcoated with a release layer of polyethylene, (b) a skim coat of wax overcoated onto the polyethylene release layer and (c) a transfer portion, the transfer portion including a cross-linked phenoxy protective lacquer layer printed onto the skim coat, a polyester ink layer printed onto the protective lacquer layer, a first adhesive layer printed onto the ink layer, any exposed portions of the underlying protective lacquer layer and a surrounding area of the skim coat, and a second adhesive layer printed onto the first adhesive layer. The first adhesive layer is made by depositing an adhesive composition comprising a water-based all-acrylic elastomeric polymer emulsion. The second adhesive layer comprises a chlorinated polyolefin of the type present in a water-based chlorinated polyolefin dispersion and also comprises a thickener in the form of a polyurethane.

A heat-transfer label suitable for use in decorating polyethylene-coated glass articles. In a preferred embodiment, the label is capable of withstanding pasteurization conditions on a polyethylene-coated glass article and includes (a) a support portion in the form of a sheet of paper overcoated with a release layer of polyethylene, (b) a skim coat of wax overcoated onto the polyethylene release layer and (c) a transfer portion, the transfer portion including a cross-linked phenoxy protective lacquer layer printed onto the skim coat, a polyester ink layer printed onto the protective lacquer layer, a first adhesive layer printed onto the ink layer and onto any exposed portions of the underlying protective lacquer layer, and a second adhesive layer printed onto the first adhesive layer. The cross-linked phenoxy resin comprises a phenoxy resin of the formula ##STR1## wherein phenoxy resin is cross-linked by a melamine formaldehyde resin. The first adhesive layer preferably comprises an acrylic adhesive resin of the type present in a water-based adhesive dispersion or in a water-based adhesive emulsion and also comprises a surfactant in the form of dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate. The second adhesive layer preferably comprises a chlorinated polyolefin of the type present in a water-based chlorinated polyolefin dispersion and also comprises a thickener in the form of a polyurethane.

Heat-transfer label including cross-linked phenoxy lacquer layer

A heat-transfer label that is well-suited for use on styrene-acrylonitrile surfaces. In one embodiment, the label includes a support portion, the support portion comprising a polyethylene-coated paper carrier web. The label also includes a waxlike skim coat overcoated on the support portion. The label further comprises a transfer portion printed on top of the skim coat, the transfer portion including a protective lacquer layer, an ink layer and an adhesive layer. The protective lacquer layer is printed onto the skim coat and comprises nitrocellulose, a release agent, a low molecular weight methyl/n-butyl methacrylate copolymer and a medium molecular weight methyl methacrylate copolymer. The ink layer, which comprises one or more polyamide inks and/or acrylic inks, is printed onto the protective lacquer layer. The adhesive layer is printed over the ink layer, as well as over any exposed portions of the lacquer layer and a surrounding portion of the skim coat and comprises a high molecular weight isobutyl methacrylate, a chlorinated polypropylene resin and glyceryl tribenzoate.

Heat-transfer label

A heat-transfer label particularly well-suited for styrene-acrylonitrile surfaces and containers. In one embodiment, the label includes a support portion, a skim coat of wax on top of the support portion, and a transfer portion on top of the skim coat of wax. The support portion includes a sheet of paper overcoated with a release layer of polyethylene. The transfer portion includes an acrylic protective lacquer layer, an ink layer over the protective lacquer layer, and a heat-activatable adhesive layer over the ink layer. The protective lacquer layer includes a methyl/n-butyl methacrylate copolymer and a methyl methacrylate copolymer. The ink layer includes a polyamide and/or acrylic ink. The adhesive layer includes an acrylic resin and a chlorinated polyolefin resin.
