A ski boot shell has a foot encasing portion and a separate ankle encasing portion. A locking arrangement secures the two portions together with their mating edges overlapping after the wearer's foot has been inserted therein.

A ski binding comprises a sole plate fixable under a boot sole, each end of the sole plate being held on a ski by a flexible cable under the action of a single tensioning device lodged in the sole plate. The cable passes about pulleys of said device, at least one of the pulleys being movable against the action of spring means to allow separation of the sole plate from the ski by withdrawal of cable.

A ski binding comprises a mounting plate having means for securing a boot sole thereon and at least one rigid intermediate linkage member directly pivotally connected at one end to said plate and at another end to the upper face of a ski about parallel axes parallel to said face of the ski. The linkage member is connected to the ski by the intermediary of a piece pivoted on the ski about an axis perpendicular to the upper face of the ski and disposed substantially along the longitudinal axis of the ski. First elastic locking means carried by one of the ski or said pivoting piece prevent rotation of said plate, and second elastic locking means carried by the ski or said plate cooperate with the plate, or the linkage member or pivoting piece respectively to prevent raising of said plate relative to said ski, as long as forces exerted on the plate in at least one direction remain below a limiting value.

A safety ski binding has a hollow hole plate of uniform thickness removably fixable under a boot sole. The ends of the sole plate are each retained on a ski by a respective flexible cable held under tension by respective spiral-spring winders both housed within the sole plate.

A ski binding comprises a sole-plate incorporating a spring-winder safety release mechanism releasably holding the plate on a ski by means of a flexible cable. A ski boot has a recessed housing defined by a peripheral wall fitting over the sole-plate. The boot sole and sole plate are locked together as a unit by locking means, such as pivoted levers or sliding bolts in the periphery of the plate engaging in corresponding recesses in the peripheral wall of the boot sole. These recesses may contain a compressible material preventing the recesses from being filled with snow or mud when the user walks. A control member is provided for voluntarily unlocking the boot from the soleplate, independently of the safety release mechanism.

A safety ski binding has a heel grip pivoted at an end of a removable sole plate. A flexible cable tensioned by a spring winder within the sole plate serves to hold the sole plate on the ski, and simultaneously biases the heel grip to an operative boot-gripping position.

A ski binding includes a soleplate, integral with a boot sole or adapted to carry a boot, to which a plate is hinged at one end about a transverse axis, this plate having an opening with a bevelled edge which passes about and comes to jam under the head of a pin fixed perpendicular to the ski. A spring urged locking member acts on the other end of the soleplate to releasably hold said other end against pivoting about said transverse axis or about said pin, and to releasably jam said opening under the head of the pin. A fixture can be provided for locking said plate on the ski whereby, when said locking member is disengaged, the soleplate is freed for pivoting about the transverse axis e.g. during ski touring.
