An acousto-optic imaging method in which light waves and unfocused acoustic waves having various directions of propagation m are emitted in a medium, by spatially modulating the amplitude of the ultrasonic transducers of an array of transducers according to several periodic spatial amplitude modulations j, and the resulting optical signal S(t) is captured. For each direction of propagation m, the signals S(t) are spatially demodulated in order to determine a signal S(t) used to reconstruct the image of the medium.

A method for analyzing a diffusing sample comprises steps of: a) illuminating the sample with temporally coherent and wavelength-modulated incident light beam; b) producing a succession of interference signals with the diffuse light; c) combining each interference signal with a reference signal (Ref(t,&#x3c4;)) generating a time port; d) extracting the continuous component of each signal characteristic of the predetermined delay (&#x3c4;) derived form c); applying a nonlinear function on each of the continuous components of the signals characterizing the predetermined delay (&#x3c4;); and f) averaging each of the images, with the non-linear function, of the continuous components of the signals characterizing the predetermined delay (&#x3c4;). The invention is useful for observing organs of the human body.
