The present invention relates to porphyrins of formula (I): wherein Rto R, Rto R, X, X' Y and Y&#x2032; are as described in claim. The invention also relates to complexes of said porphyrins with transition metals, in particular iron, preferably as Fe(III) or Fe(0) complex, and salts thereof, use thereof as catalysts for the selective electrochemical reduction of COinto CO, electrochemical cells comprising said complexes, and a method for selectively reducing electrochemically COinto CO using said complexes.

The present invention relates to catalysts for the production of CO gas through electrochemical COreduction. In particular, the present invention relates to an electrochemical cell comprising an iron porphyrin as the catalyst for the COreduction into CO, a method of performing electrochemical reduction of COusing said electrochemical cell thereby producing CO gas, and a method of performing electrochemical reduction of COusing said iron porphyrin catalyst thereby producing CO gas.

Methods for producing by electrochemical reduction a carbon-containing material with its surface modified by organic groups, in particular functionalized organic groups. Certain embodiments of the methods include contacting the carbon-containing material with an organic diazonium salt in solvent, optionally in the presence of an electrolyte and negatively polarizing the carbon-containing material relative to an anode also in contact with an electrolytic solution separate from said diazonium salt solution, wherein the electrochemical reduction is carried out on an organic diazonium salt in protic solvent in an acid medium. Carbon-containing materials with a surface modified by organic groups and the use of these modified materials, for example for producing composite materials or for fixing molecules of biological interest, are taught.

A method for producing by electrochemical reduction a carbon-containing material with its surface modified by organic groups, in particular functionalized organic groups, contacting the carbon-containing material with an organic diazonium salt in solvent, optionally in the presence of an electrolyte; negative polarisation of the carbon-containing material relative to an anode also in contact with an electrolyte solution separate from the diazonium salt solution. The electrochemical reduction is carried out on an organic diazonium salt in protic solvent in an acid medium.

The invention concerns a process for electrochemically producing a carbonaceous material with its surface modified by organic groups, in particular functionalized organic groups. The process comprises providing a solution, in a protic or aprotic solvent, comprising a salt of a carboxylate of an organic residue capable of undergoing a Kolbe reaction. The solution is then put in contact with a carbonaceous material, wherein the carbonaceous material is positively polarized with respect to a cathode that is also in contact with the solution. The solution may optionally contain an electrolyte. The invention also concerns carbonaceous materials modified at the surface with arylmethyl groups and the use of these modified materials, for example, in the production of composite materials.
