A system including a tool recognition assembly comprising a first target reader with a first detection zone. The system also includes a tool configured to be installed in the tool recognition assembly, wherein the first reader detects a first reading indicating a presence or absence of the first target in the first detection zone during an installation of the tool in the tool recognition assembly, the detected first reading being at least a part of a detected insertion signature, and provides the detected insertion signature to initiate a comparison of the detected insertion signature to one or more model signatures.

These and other examples can provide connector receptacles that can be easily aligned to an opening in an electronic device, as well as connector inserts and connector receptacles that can be readily manufactured.

A system and method for collecting operation data associated with a medical apparatus including an internal device implanted in a subject and an external device that is magnetically-coupled to and drives the internal device. The medical apparatus may be monitored to obtain raw data associated with the operation of the medical apparatus and one or more calculations may be performed on the raw data, wherein the raw data and/or calculated values may be associated with voiding frequency and voiding volume of the subject. A report may be generated from the raw data and/or calculated values. In addition, one or more signals may be sent to the external device and/or a docking station, or communicated by other means, to indicate to the subject that the operation of the medical apparatus should be altered.

System and method for collecting clinical data associated with a medical apparatus including an implantable device

An electrical plug and receptacle relying on magnetic force from an electromagnet to maintain contact are disclosed. The plug and receptacle can be used as part of a power adapter for connecting an electronic device, such as a laptop computer, to a power supply. The plug includes electrical contacts, which are preferably biased toward corresponding contacts on the receptacle. The plug and receptacle each have a magnetic element. The magnetic element on one of the plug or receptacle can be a magnet or ferromagnetic material. The magnetic element on the other of the plug or receptacle is an electromagnet. When the plug and receptacle are brought into proximity, the magnetic attraction between the electromagnet magnet and its complement, whether another magnet or a ferromagnetic material, maintains the contacts in an electrically conductive relationship.

A magnetic image system for providing a visible image includes a magnetic substrate having a first and a second opposing surface and formed of material that is magnetized into a pattern of magnetized regions corresponding to the visible image, the magnetized regions forming a magnetic surface having a size and a shape in accordance with the visible image and a magnetic property corresponding to a visible image property, wherein the magnetic surface is rendered visible as the visible image using a magnetic imaging medium that interacts with the magnetic surface in accordance with the magnetic property.

Magnetic imaging

An electric machine employs laminated sheets windings (LSWs) and permanent magnets which rotate about the LSWs. A 'radial' embodiment employs magnets which are magnetized radially and LSWs laid parallel to the rotation axis. An 'axial' embodiment uses axially magnetized magnets with LSWs laid radially in the plane of the motor. The magnets may be arranged as Halbach arrays. Magnets and LSWs are arranged concentrically with an air gap therebetween; the motor may employ 'Large Air Gap Electric Ring' (LAGER) technology. The laminated sheets form a continuous stack of series-connected concentric metal layers; dielectric layers insulate each metal layer from its adjacent layers. Cuts arranged periodically around each LSW run parallel to the rotation axis and extend through all of the metal layers, with adjacent cuts originating on opposite sides of the LSW such that they form a serpentine path for current to flow as it flows around the winding.

An electronic device (such as a laptop) may selectively latch a base to a lid using a switchable magnet array. In particular, a drive circuit in the electronic device may apply at least a current pulse to a conductor that generates a magnetic field to reverse a direction of a remnant magnetization in the switchable magnet array. By reversing the direction of the remnant magnetization, the electronic device may selectively increase or decrease a magnetic field generated by the switchable magnet array at an attraction plate in the electronic device. This magnetic field may, in turn, result in an attractive force between the switchable magnet array and the attraction plate, thereby selectively latching the base and the lid when the base and the lid are proximate to each other.

A levitator is disclosed. The levitator may include a repulsion wire coil having a vertical coil axis, a position control wire coil having a vertical coil axis, a rotation control wire coil having a horizontal coil axis, and a controller coupled to each of the repulsion wire coil, position wire coil, and rotation wire coil, where the controller is configured to independently control currents provided to each of the repulsion wire coil, position wire coil, and rotation wire coil to levitate an item.

Electromagnetic levitator

A sleep mode system for an electronic device can include a magnetic component and a proximately located sensor configured to detect magnetic field properties that vary with a variable rotation of the magnetic component. The magnetic component can rotate with one device component, such as a laptop lid, while the sensor remains stationary with another device component, such as a laptop base. A controller can determine the orientation angle of the magnetic component based on the detected properties, and can put the device into or remove the device from a sleep mode based on the angle, which can reflect an open state or closed state for the electronic device.
