In order to detect, localize and interpret a partial discharge occurring in a partial discharge site along an electrical equipment, two measurement probes and a synchronization probe are installed along the electrical equipment. The measurement probes detect pulses travelling in the electrical equipment while the synchronization probe detects a phase angle in the electrical equipment and is usable for calibration purposes. A control unit receives the signals sensed by the probes and conditions them. Digital processing applied on the conditioned signals, involving their correlation, a time-frequency distribution and a form factor estimation, allows establishing a diagnosis indicating a detection of a partial discharge and its localization along the electrical equipment. A wideband magnetic probe may be provided for detecting the pulses traveling in the electrical equipment.

Detection, localization and interpretation of partial discharge

A non-contact measuring method and apparatus for producing a signal representative of a distance between facing surfaces of first and second parts, which are closely spaced apart such as the rotor and stator of an electric rotating machine. The method resides in positioning a sensor on the surface of the first part. The sensor includes first and second parallel, superimposed conductive plates electrically insulated from one another. The second plate is located in between the first plate and the surface of the first part. The first plate is fed with a high frequency signal through a resistance. A high impedance, low input capacity, unitary gain voltage amplifier is fed with the high frequency signal through the resistance. The second plate is fed with an output signal of the amplifier. The output signal of the amplifier is directly proportional to the distance between the two surfaces.

Non-contact measuring method and apparatus for producing a signal representative of a distance between facing surfaces

The method consists in positioning a probe in front of a pair of teeth provided on the face of the magnetic circuit of an electric machine. The probe has spaced apart magnetic prong portions having respective end faces adapted to match the teeth of the pair with the end faces in registry with the teeth. The prong portions are respectively provided with an excitation winding and a measurement winding. The excitation winding is excited to induce a magnetic flux in a test zone formed of the teeth in front of the probe and a portion of the magnetic circuit extending therebetween. The current flowing in the excitation winding and the voltage across the measurement winding are measured for calculating a resulting power which is indicative of the condition of the test zone. The apparatus is formed of the probe and electronics carrying out the above functions.

The current surge indicator (10) has a ferromagnetic member (12) held about a conductor (15) with the ends of the member (12) in proximity and facing each other such that the ends are attracted to one another with a given force as current passes through the conductor (15). When the force exceeds a given threshold, a signal is created to help in locating where the current surge took place. The member may be spring loaded to open up, and the signal may be provided by the member being released by the current surge such that the member falls from the conductor. The conductor may be an anchor cable of an insulator or tower beam for a power transmission line.

Current surge indicator

An antenna receives, by capacitive effect, a current of which the intensity is a function of the distance separating the antenna from an electrical power line. The other factors that influence the current are fixed, constant or are considered negligible. A measuring and conditioning circuit converts the current at the output of the antenna into a coded signal and transmits this coded signal to a control unit. The control unit compares the coded signal to predetermined values stored therein. Alarms are generated by the control unit when the current from the antenna exceeds the predetermined values.
