The described invention provides a low fouling, high particle density polymerization process and an olefin polymerization catalyst composition comprising the reaction product of a) an organic polymeric support i) having a surface area of from about 1 to 10 m.sup.2 /g and ii) functionalized with an acidic proton-containing ammonium salt of a non-coordinating anion, and b) an organometallic transition metal compound having ancillary ligands, at least one labile ligand capable of abstraction by protonation by said ammonium salt and at least one labile ligand into which an olefinic monomer can insert for polymerization. In a preferred embodiment, the polymeric support has a surface area of .ltoreq.10 m.sup.2 /g and is particularly suitable for use with high activity organometallic, transition metal catalyst compounds.

There is provided a method of introducing ethylenically unsaturated functionality, into an alkylstyrene homopolymer or copolymer with an isoolefin, at the alkylbenzyl carbon atom comprising the steps of: forming a solution of the polymer in a hydrocarbon solvent; adding to the polymer solution an alkali metal (Na, K, Rb, Cs) alkoxide and an alkyl lithium compound to form a solution of a metalated intermediate; and adding a halodialkylalkenyl silane to the metalated polymer solution. Porous polymer monoliths are made thermally responsive by functionalizing/grafting the pores with thermally responsive polymers and copolymers. Depending on the reaction conditions employed, the grafted polymer can either completely block flow through micrometer-sized pores in the monoliths or control the flow rate through the monoliths. The grafted monoliths are useful as thermal gates, thermal valves, and for isocratic hydrophobic interaction chromatography of proteins.

This invention provides a method by which an alkylstyrene containing polymer may be exclusively functionalized at the primary benzylic carbon site of the styrenic monomer.
