A luer medical connector having a male luer body for connection with a female luer assembly which includes a female luer body, a fluid channel insert within the female luer body, an elastomeric seal between the female luer body and the male luer body, and an elastomeric stopper at a proximal end of the female luer body.

Medical luer connector

A medical fluid flowline connector comprised of axially aligned relatively rotatable male and female Luer parts and an axially compressible elastomeric seal therebetween. An elastomeric stopper may be provided in the female Luer, the stopper having a swabbable end urged outwardly of the female Luer. The stopper is guided on an axially extending elongated flow conducting insert which has an end which contacts a deformable slit in the swabbable end of the stopper to ensure deformation and opening of the slot as a male Luer at the end of a fluid flowline is pushed against the stopper. The stopper skirt is deformed and displaced into annular space between the female Luer and the insert, the stopper having bellows like walls which engage the female Luer and insert. A retrograde flow preventer may be positioned in the fluid flow path comprising a resilient member having a perforation which remains closed when its exterior surface is exposed to retrograde flow of medication or blood and which may open when its interior surface is exposed to sufficient negative flow pressures as when drawing blood.

Needleless Luer activated medical connector

A medical fluid flowline connector comprised of axially aligned relatively rotatable male and female Luer parts and an axially compressible elastomeric seal therebetween includes an elastomeric stopper in the female Luer, the stopper having a swabbable end urged outwardly of the female Luer. The stopper is guided on an axially extending elongated flow conducting insert which has an end which contacts a deformable slit in the swabbable end of the stopper to ensure deformation and opening of the slot as a male Luer at the end of a fluid flowline is pushed against the stopper. The stopper skirt is deformed and displaced into annular space between the female Luer and the insert, the stopper having bellows like walls which engage the female Luer and insert.

A medical fluid flowline connector comprised of axially aligned relatively rotatable parts preferably comprising a male Luer and a female Luer and an axially compressed elastomeric valve element therebetween includes an elastomeric swabbable stopper permanently positioned in the female Luer, the stopper having a head urged by spring force outwardly of the female Luer when the spring is compressed and also being retained therein by the spring. The spring may comprise an axially compressible resilient portion of the stopper or it may comprise a separate compressible element. An axially extending elongated post integral with the female Luer is configured with axially extending lobes which define flow passageways and has an end which contacts a deformable slit in a head on the stopper to ensure deformation and opening of the slit as a male Luer at the end of a fluid flowline is inserted against the stopper and displaces and deforms the stopper into the female Luer of the flowline connector during flowline connection. The exposed undeformed outer end of the stopper presents a substantially smooth surface which may be swabbed with alcohol and which prevents ingress of contaminants into the female Luer of the connector.

A protective sleeve and adaptor hub combination for retrofitting conventional medical syringes so that the syringe needle may be completely enclosed in the protective sleeve following use of the syringe. The protective sleeve is typically made of polypropylene plastic whereas the adaptor hub which fits in the protective sleeve is made of a harder material Such as polycarbonate. The adaptor hub has internal male threads of hardness suitable for penetrating and cutting female thread grooves in the relatively soft material of a nozzle end of a medical syringe during relative rotation of the protective sleeve and adaptor hub combination and the syringe. Once connected, the hub and sleeve cannot be removed from the syringe. The protective sleeve also has internal spiral tracks and the hub has external follower projections engaged in the tracks for guiding movement of the adaptor hub in the protective sleeve. The sleeve and hub also have an engageable mating annual rib and recess which restrains axial movement of the hub and an attached syringe in the sleeve.

A retractable blood collection device having a housing comprised of relatively rotatable parts and a hub in the housing supporting a double ended cannula which is retracted by spring pressure into the housing when the housing parts are rotated to contain the used cannula in the housing for safe disposal.

A needle-less three part medical fluid flowline connector comprised of a relatively rotatable male Luer housing and a female Luer valve actuator includes a compressed elastomeric valve element having a fluid passageway therein which extends from an axially aligned end on one side of the valve element to an off-center positioned end on the other side of the valve element and avoids the use of a cannula and septum which is pierced during valve opening. Rotation of the compressible valve element with respect to the housing in which it is seated is prevented by interengaged fingers and grooves on the housing and valve element. Withdrawal of the valve actuator from the housing is prevented by a abutting radially extending surfaces and an annular bulge and groove on the actuator and housing respectively. An interengageable longitudinally extending finger and diametrically spaced grooves on the actuator and housing enable the user to readily position the valve in an open or closed position.

Needle-less luer actuated medical connector

A medical valve element has a first solid portion of circular cross-section, a second cylindrical portion with a frustoconical interior passage, and a third hollow cylindrical portion featuring peripheral grooves. The valve element is made of elastomeric material and the first portion is surrounded by a solid metallic collar. The valve element is used in a medical valve. The valve has a cannula mounded on a hub and fixed in a fluid conduit so that the cannula points upstream. The elastomeric valve element is mounted on the hub within the conduit so as to enclose the cannula. In use, the valve element is compressed by application of a medical appliance to the valve element first portion to cause the cannula point to pierce the first portion to provide a path for fluid flow through the conduit. The collar causes the valve first portion to reseal upon removal of the medical appliance and expansion of the valve element back to its original condition.

Medical valve element

A valve for medical use has a cannula mounted on a hub and fixed in a fluid conduit so that the cannula points upstream. An elastomeric valve element is mounted on the hub within the conduit so as to enclose the cannula. The valve element has a first solid portion of circular cross-section disposed upstream of the cannula point which closes the conduit, a second hollow frustoconical portion within which the cannula point is disposed, and a third hollow cylindrical portion surrounding the cannula downstream from its point and fixed to the hub. The second portion has a frustoconical interior passageway. In use, the valve element is compressed by application of a medical appliance to the valve element first portion to cause the cannula point to pierce the first portion to provide a path for fluid flow through the conduit.

Medical valve

A valve for medical use has a cannula mounted on a hub and fixed in a fluid conduit so that the cannula points upstream. An elastomeric valve element is mounted on the hub within the conduit so as to enclose the cannula. The valve element has a first solid frustoconical portion upstream of the cannula point, a second hollow frustoconical portion within which the cannula point is disposed, and a third hollow cylindrical portion surrounding the cannula downstream from its point and fixed to the hub. The second portion has a frustoconical interior passageway tapering inwardly from the first portion toward the hub. A supplementary metallic frustoconical sleeve is fixed within the second element interior so as to open outwardly toward the first element and enclose the cannula point. In one type of use, the valve element is compressed to cause the cannula point to pierce the first portion to provide a path for fluid flow through the conduit. In another type of use, the sleeve assists the user in instances in which a manually held external cannula is to be used to penetrate the first element and then be inserted into the lumen of the valve cannula so as to properly align the external cannula with the lumen of the valve cannula to provide a fluid passageway from the external cannula through the valve.

A medical device which presents the backflow of fluid therethrough is particularly useful as a bloodless catheter assembly, that is, prevents the backflow of blood through the catheter by utilization of a self-closing valve carried in a hollow catheter housing to one end of which a catheter is fixed so as to provide a fluid passage through the catheter and catheter housing. The fluid passage in the catheter housing is sealed by a self-sealing valve element extending transversely across the passage upstream from the catheter. A hollow needle is held in the catheter housing downstream of and pointed at the valve element. Attachment of a fluid dispensing medical appliance to the other catheter housing end forces the valve element downstream onto the needle so as to pierce the valve element and open a fluid passage from the catheter housing upstream of the valve element through the hollow needle to the catheter. Removal of the medical appliance permits the resiliently biased valve element to move upstream away from the needle, thereby resealing and thus reclosing the fluid passage which extends through the hollow needle.

Bloodless catheter

A retractable intravenous needle assembly wherein a cannula is mounted on a hub within an interior passage formed in a housing in which the cannula and hub are slidably mounted so as to have the cannula point manually extend beyond the housing. Flexible wings extending laterally from the housing are manually folded upwardly to release a locking stop formed in the interior passage from engaging a locking lug on the hub. The cannula point is then manually retracted into the housing until the locking lug engages a locking recess formed in the interior passage to lock the hub in the housing. The locking recess is so located in the passage that the housing completely encloses the cannula point when the locking lug is locked in the locking recess, thus facilitating handling and disposal of the used assembly without endangering hospital personnel.

Retractable intravenous needle assembly

A blood collection device wherein a double-ended cannula is retracted within the barrel of the device for storage and disposal. The cannula is attached to the device immediately prior to use by being threaded into an aperture formed in a movable disc disposed within the barrel and rotated to a locked operating position for attachment of the cannula and use. After use, the disc is counter-rotated to permit the cannula, mounted to the disc, to be longitudinally retracted completely within the barrel to a position in which the cannula is permanently locked by stopping the disc against further movement. The disc aperture is threaded in the same direction as it is rotated to the operating position to avoid moving the disc out of the locked position during attachment of the cannula to the device.

Disposable blood collection device

A connector for use in introducing medication into a patient having a pair of plastic tubular members adapted to be manually pushed together to engage in a mating relationship with a locking mechanism that selectively secures the members together. One of the members has a sealed entry port at its end and the other member contains a needle which centrally pierces the seal of the port upon engagement of the members.
