A bearing arrangement for a turbomachine includes first and second roller element bearings. The first bearing and the second bearing are disposed on opposite axial ends of an intermediate sleeve of the rotating group. The first bearing has a first inner race with a first inner radial surface and a first outer radial surface. The first inner radial surface has a first interference fit with a shaft of the rotating group. The first outer radial surface has a second interference fit with the intermediate sleeve. The second bearing has a second inner race with a second inner radial surface and a second outer radial surface. The second inner race receives the shaft with a clearance fit. The second outer radial surface has a third interference fit with the intermediate sleeve. The second inner race is coaxially aligned with the first inner race and the shaft via coaxial alignment of the intermediate sleeve and the first inner race.

A method of loading a rotating assembly of a turbocharger includes positioning a lock collar on an end portion of a turbocharger shaft that extends through a through bore of a compressor wheel; applying a pulling force to the end portion of the turbocharger shaft to achieve a desired amount of loading; welding the lock collar to form a welded lock collar fixed to the end portion of the turbocharger shaft; and releasing the pulling force where the welded lock collar maintains the desired amount of loading.

A variable-nozzle turbocharger includes a cartridge containing a variable vane mechanism connected between the center housing and the turbine housing. The cartridge comprises an annular nozzle ring supporting an array of rotatable vanes, an insert having a tubular portion sealingly received into the bore of the turbine housing and having a nozzle portion extending radially out from one end of the tubular portion and being axially spaced from the nozzle ring with the vanes therebetween, a plurality of spacers connected between the nozzle portion of the insert and the nozzle ring, and an annular retainer ring fastened to the center housing so as to capture the nozzle ring between the retainer ring and the center housing. The retainer ring is formed as a separate part from the insert ring and is mechanically and thermally decoupled from the insert.

A fluid pressure actuator for a turbocharger system's turbine bypass valve comprises a piston slidable in a cylinder so as to define a chamber containing a compression spring assembly operable to exert a spring force on the piston. The cylinder can be selectively subjected to a vacuum or pressure for exerting a fluid pressure force on the piston in a direction opposite from the spring force. The spring assembly comprises a first spring arranged to be compressed by the piston throughout a first range of motion of the piston in a compression direction, and at least a second spring arranged to be compressed by the piston throughout a second range of motion that is smaller than and co-terminal with the first range of motion but to be uncompressed during an initial part of the first range of motion of the piston in the compression direction.

Turbocharger system with turbine bypass valve actuated by multiple-rate fluid pressure actuator

An exhaust gas valve assembly includes a housing defining a cavity therein and having an intake port and an exhaust port. A valve seat has a first axial end secured to the housing and a second axial end that is disposed within but decoupled a distance from the housing. The second axial end defines one or more apertures that provide fluid communication between the intake and exhaust ports. A seal is disposed between the second axial end of the valve seat and the housing so as to close the decoupled distance therebetween. A piston is received within and is axially movable relative to the valve seat so as to open and close the one or more apertures and thereby regulate exhaust gas flow between the intake and exhaust ports.

A subassembly of a system including an exhaust gas turbocharger system coupled with an internal combustion engine exhaust system, includes first and second components secured to each other, wherein the components are heated to an operational temperature by engine exhaust gases during engine operation. The components are secured to each other by or with a 'low-melt material' whose melting temperature is less than the operational temperature, such that the low-melt material melts or at least loses its securing and/or positioning functionality upon operation of the engine and turbocharger system, and thus no longer performs any fastening or positioning function for the components. In some embodiments, temporary fasteners made of or including the low-melt material are employed for temporarily securing and positioning the components.

A turbocharger having a variable geometry turbine inlet incorporating a cylindrical piston movable to vary the area of the inlet nozzle into the turbine. Vanes mounted to the piston for flow control in the nozzle are received through a slotted heat shield which provides smooth aerodynamic flow into the turbine blades. The vanes additionally incorporate a step having larger cord and depth that engages the surface of the heat shield and seals the slots with the piston in a closed position. An axial actuator is attached for operation of the piston.

A turbocharger having a variable geometry turbine inlet incorporates a piston movable to vary the area of the inlet nozzle into the turbine. Vanes extending from the heat shield for flow control in the nozzle are engaged by the piston in a first closed position. In a second open position, the piston is spaced from the vanes increasing the inlet nozzle area.
