A system an method are provided for providing a service, such as telemonitoring, in particular via the Internet. The system includes a terminal device of a communication network having elements for establishing a connection with a service provider device through at least the communication network, and an application server able to receive a service request from the service provider device on the connection. Thus, the terminal device can make itself accessible to a service provider device as soon as it is put into service. Furthermore, the fact that the terminal device is at the initiative of the connection for this service secures access to the data of the terminal device relating to this service.

A technique protects, in a communications network, a point-to-multipoint primary tree between a root node and primary leaf nodes of the network if a failure occurs affecting one of the primary leaf nodes. One network node receives from another upstream network node a request to protect the primary tree via a backup branch leading to a backup leaf node situated downstream from said node, if a failure affecting one of the primary leaf nodes to be protected occurs, the backup leaf node being associated with the primary leaf node to be protected. If the node is connected directly to the downstream primary leaf node to be protected, it configures a backup routing rule for routing packets from an upstream primary branch to the downstream backup branch and, possibly, to the downstream primary branch(es) and is activated in the event of a failure affecting the primary leaf node to be protected.

A method and apparatus are provided for configuring a virtual circuit set up between a first and a second terminal installation. The link may have three states: a non-connected state if said two routers cannot be directly connected, a virtual connection state wherein a virtual metric is assigned to said link between said head end router and said tail end router of the same communication, and a real connection state wherein a real metric is normally assigned to said link.

A method of creating a tunnel for transporting at least one data flow in a label-switched telecommunication network, the telecommunication network comprising at least one ingress edge router, a server able to define tunnels, called static tunnels, in the telecommunication network based on traffic forecasts in the telecommunication network. The method includes the steps, performed by an ingress edge router receiving an admission request from a client to transfer a data flow in the telecommunication network, of determining whether a static tunnel defined by the server in the telecommunication network is able to transport the data flow, creating a tunnel, called dynamic tunnel, able to transport the data flow in the telecommunication network if no static tunnel defined by the server is able to transport the data flow.
