Light emitting structures and methods of fabrication are described. In an embodiment, LED coupons are transferred to a carrier substrate and then patterned to LED mesa structures. Patterning may be performed on heterogeneous groups of LED coupons with a common mask set. The LED mesa structure are then transferred in bulk to a display substrate. In an embodiment, a light emitting structure includes an arrangement of LEDs with different thickness, and corresponding bottom contacts with different thicknesses bonded to a display substrate.

Micro LED based display panel

Display panels and methods of manufacture are described for down converting a peak emission wavelength of a pump LED within a subpixel with a quantum dot layer. In some embodiments, pump LEDs with a peak emission wavelength below 500 nm, such as between 340 nm and 420 nm are used. QD layers in accordance with embodiments can be integrated into a variety of display panel structures including a wavelength conversion cover arrangement, QD patch arrangement, or QD layers patterned on the display substrate.

Light emitting structure to aid LED light extraction

A display may have an array of pixels. Each pixel may have a light-emitting diode such as an organic light-emitting diode or may be formed from other pixel structures such as liquid crystal display pixel structures. The pixels may emit light such as red, green, and blue light. An angle-of-view adjustment layer may overlap the array of pixels. During operation, light from the pixels passes through the angle-of-view adjustment layer to a user. The viewing angle for the user is enhanced as the angular spread of the emitted light from the pixels is enhanced by the angle-of-view adjustment layer. The angle-of-view adjustment layer may be formed from holographic structures recorded by applying laser beams to a photosensitive layer or may be formed from a metasurface that is created by patterning nanostructures on the display using printing, photolithography, or other patterning techniques.

LED structures are disclosed to reduce non-radiative sidewall recombination along sidewalls of vertical LEDs including p-n diode sidewalls that span a top current spreading layer, bottom current spreading layer, and active layer between the top current spreading layer and bottom current spreading layer.

A display may have display layers that form an array of pixels. The display layers may include a first layer that includes a light-blocking matrix and a second layer that overlaps the first layer. The first layer may include quantum dot elements formed in openings in the light-blocking matrix. The light-blocking matrix may be formed from a reflective material such as metal. The second layer may include color filter elements that overlap corresponding quantum dot elements in the first layer. Substrate layers may be used to support the first and second layers and to support thin-film transistor circuitry that is used in controlling light transmission through the array of pixels. The display layers may include a liquid crystal layer, polarizer layers, filter layers for reflecting red and green light and/or other light to enhance light recycling, and layers with angularly dependent transmission characteristics.

Displays with collimated light sources and quantum dots

Methods, systems, and apparatuses for controlling an emission of the light emitting devices are described herein. The light emitting devices may be light emitting diode (LED) devices including &#x3bc;LED devices or organic LED (OLED) devices. Emission control of the LED may be performed using a micro-scale driving circuit (e.g., &#x3bc;Driver) containing drive transistors for constant current driving of the light emitting devices. One embodiment provides for a display driver hardware circuit including emission logic, the emission logic including comparator logic to compare a data voltage from a storage capacitor to a voltage ramp provided via the TFT backplane, the comparator logic to cause the emission logic to generate an emission pulse to an LED device, and wherein the integrated circuit is to switch and drive a plurality of LED devices. In one embodiment each of the plurality of LED devices is a subpixel for a display device.

Quantum dot integration schemes

Display panel configurations are described in which a pixel-level integrated black matrix layer is combined with an elliptical polarizer. The elliptical polarizer may allow for increased transmission of emissive LEDs in the display panel, while the black matrix layer may mitigate internal reflection of ambient light.

Quantum dot backlights for use in displays and processes for controlling the dimming of quantum dot backlights are provided. The backlight can include an LED (e.g., a blue LED) configured to emit a light through a sheet of quantum dots. The quantum dots can be configured to emit colored light (e.g., red and green light) in response to the light emitted from the LED. To control the relative luminance of the LED, the backlight can be controlled through the use of current dimming to adjust the brightness of the LED at high relative luminance settings to increase the light output efficiency and can include the use of pulse width modulation to adjust the brightness of the LED at low relative luminance settings to reduce the amount of wavelength shift experienced by the LED.

A display has an array of display pixels formed from display layers such as one or more polarizer layers, a substrate on which an array of display pixel elements such as color filter elements and downconverter elements are formed, a liquid crystal layer, and a thin-film transistor layer that includes display pixel electrodes and display pixel thin-film transistors for driving control signals onto the display pixel electrodes to modulate light passing through the display pixels. A light source such as one or more laser diodes or light-emitting diodes may be used to generate light for the display. The light may be launched into the edge of a polymer layer or other light guide plate structure. A light guide plate ma include phase-matched structures such as holographically recorded gratings or photonic lattices that direct the light upwards through the array of display pixels.
