A downhole borehole cleaning apparatus () for recirculating drill cuttings contained in a downhole borehole is provided and has a body () having an outer surface for contacting downhole fluid containing said drill cuttings, the downhole fluid comprising a certain pressure within the downhole borehole (). The body () has a pair of bearing surfaces (U;D) spaced apart along the longitudinal axis of the body (), and the pair of bearing surfaces (U;D) comprise substantially the same maximum outer diameter (d) which is greater than the maximum outer diameter of the rest () of the body (). Each of the pair of bearing surfaces (U;D) comprises a substantially constant and un-interrupted diameter (d) around its whole outer circumference for at least a portion of its longitudinal length; this forces all of the drilling fluid to pass around that maximum outer diameter. The outer surface of the body () further comprises a low pressure generation means () located in between the two longitudinally spaced apart bearing surfaces (U;D) for generating a region of lower pressure in the downhole fluid within that region compared to the said certain pressure. A method of cleaning a downhole borehole is also described involving miming in a work string comprising a downhole borehole cleaning tool () into a borehole to be cleaned, and permitting or arranging for relative movement to occur between the downhole borehole cleaning tool () and fluid located in the annulus () in the borehole () whereby drill cuttings are recirculated.

Downhole cleaning tool

A drill stem element for drilling a well with flow of a drilling fluid around the element and in a direction extending from a drilling well bottom towards the surface, including a member and a coupling mounted for rotation about the member. The coupling includes at least two abutment zones on a wall of the well during drilling, each abutment zone externally includes at least one abutment portion having an outer diameter greater than a diameter of other portions of the element, each abutment zone having a convex rounded shape generated by revolution, each abutment zone being axially remote from at least one other abutment zone. The coupling further includes an intermediate zone between the two abutment zones, an opening being provided between the coupling and the member for the flow of drilling fluid between the coupling and the member forming a fluid bearing.

Drill stem element and corresponding drill pipe

A drillpipe for a drill stem to drill a hole. The drill stem includes a drill string and a bottom hole assembly. The drillpipe includes a first end having a first inertia, a second end having a second inertia, a first intermediate zone adjacent to the first end, a second intermediate zone adjacent to the second end, and a central substantially tubular zone with an external diameter smaller than the maximum external diameter of at least the first or the second end. A casing is fixed on the pipe over a portion of the external surface thereof, at least one physical parameter sensor is disposed in the casing, and at least one data transmission/storage mechanism is connected to the sensor output, the casing being disposed at a distance from the first and second ends, the casing being integral with the central zone at a distance from the first and second intermediate zones and having a smaller inertia than the first and second inertias.

Drill pipe and corresponding drill fitting

A drill string element including an elongate tubular body delimiting an interior surface longitudinally including at least one portion of revolution and including a first hole provided in the elongate tubular body. That first hole includes a first end opening at the portion of revolution, and in a vicinity of the first end a longitudinal axis intersecting the interior surface at an intersection location. The longitudinal axis, in projection into a first plane passing through the central axis of the portion of revolution and containing the intersection location, forms a first angle of a value that is not zero and in projection into a second plane tangential to the interior surface at the intersection location forms a second angle of a value that is not zero.

Instrumented drill string element

An element for a drill string includes at least one zone bearing on a wall of the drilled hole, the bearing zone including at least one bearing section with an external diameter greater than the diameter of the other portions of the element, and two activation zones substantially adjacent to the bearing zone and disposed upstream and downstream of the bearing zone. The activation zones include a plurality of grooves with a generally helical shape about the axis of the element. The bearing zone includes two guide sections in a shape of a convex rounded body of revolution, disposed upstream and downstream of the bearing section in a manner adjacent to the bearing section, and tangential to the bearing section and to the activation zones.

Drill packer member, drill pipe, and corresponding drill pipe string

The drill string element has at least one bearing zone for bearing against the wall of the borehole during drilling. The bearing zone comprises at least one bearing segment extending in the axial direction and having an outside surface that is cylindrical and of constant diameter greater than the diameter of any other portion of the surface of the element, and also having a guide zone that is circularly symmetrical about the axis of the drill string element. The bearing zone preferably also has a drilling fluid activation zone extending axially in a disposition adjacent to the bearing segment. The guide zone presents a radius of curvature not less than one-third the outside diameter of the bearing segment. The outside surface of the intermediate activation zone presents a meridian having a first meridian portion and a second meridian portion situated downstream from the first meridian portion, the meridian portions being inclined in opposite directions relative to the axis, sloping towards the axis and being connected together by a minimum-diameter portion of the bearing zone.

The stabilizer () has a tubular central body () having means for connection () to a first and a second component of the string of drill rods and at least one external contact element () with a wall () of the borehole (). The external element () for contact of the stabilizer () with the wall () of the borehole () has at least one means for activation () of a means () co-operating with the wall () of the borehole () to limit the friction between the contact element () and the wall () of the borehole (). The activation means can consist of inter-blade spaces () for acceleration of the circulation () of the drilling liquid or by a means for coupling in rotation of the external element () and the central body () of the stabilizer ().

Stabilizer device for rotary string of drill rods with reduced friction

A profiled element for rotary drilling equipment and applications to components of a string of drill pipes has an area of abutment on the wall of a drilling hole having a maximum diameter constituting the maximum diameter of the rotary drilling equipment and a turbulence area for producing an activation of the circulation of a drilling fluid in the annulus. The profiled element also has a deflection area adjacent to the abutment area and to the turbulence area, having at least one surface inclined with respect to the axis of the rotary drilling, whose meridian line moves away from the axis in the direction going from bottom to top, in the service position of the profiled element in the drilling hole.

Profiled element for rotary drilling equipment and applications to components of a string of drill pipes

A rotating drill pipe string element (1) includes at least one portion (2a) of tubular shape whose external surface has at least one groove (8a, 8b, 8c, 8d, 8e) arranged in a helix having as an axis the axis (O) of the tubular portion (2a). The groove (8a, 8b, 8c, 8d, 8e) has a cross-section in a plane perpendicular to the axis (O) of the portion having an undercut part (10) lying to the rear of a radius (OA) of the cross-section of the tubular portion, (2a), the radius passing through the external end (A) of the area of the groove (8c) lying to the rear, with respect to the forward direction of rotation of the pipe string of the groove (8c) with respect to the forward direction of rotation (.OMEGA.) of the pipe string.
