Process for producing aminocarboxylic acid of formula (I): NH—CH—(CH)—COOH (I) including: (i) reacting the unsaturated carboxylic acid of formula (II): CH═CH—(CH)—COOH (II) with hydrogen bromide to form the ω-bromoalkanoic acid of formula (iii): Br—CH—(CH)—COOH (III); (ii) reacting the ω-bromoalkanoic acid obtained with ammonia in aqueous solution to form a reaction mixture; (iii) separating the reaction mixture of the aminocarboxylic acid of formula (I) and an aqueous solution rich in ammonium bromide; (iv) bringing the aqueous solution rich in ammonium bromide into contact with sodium hydroxide to form ammonia and an aqueous solution rich in sodium bromide; (v) purifying the aqueous solution rich in sodium bromide; (vi) bringing the purified aqueous solution rich in sodium bromide into contact with chlorine to form bromine and an aqueous solution rich in sodium chloride; (vii) reacting the bromine with hydrogen to form hydrogen bromide; and (viii) recycling the hydrogen bromide to step (i).

The present invention relates to a composition which comprises at least one &#x3b1;,&#x3c9;-amino-alkanoic acid or ester and at least one alkanoic ester or acid, characterised in that: the &#x3b1;,&#x3c9;-amino-alkanoic acid or ester has formula HN&#x2014;(CH)COOR, wherein n=9 to 13 and R is an alkyl group or a hydrogen; the alkanoic ester or acid has formula R&#x2014;COOR, wherein Ris a straight or branched alkyl group with formula CHor CH, wherein m=6 to 20 and Ris an alkyl group or a hydrogen; the molar ratio between the alkanoic acid(s) or ester(s) and the &#x3b1;,&#x3c9;-amino-alkanoic acid(s) or ester(s) is in the range from 0.001 to 0.4%. The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing methylmercaptopropionaldehyde (MMP) including at least the following steps: (a) dehydrating glycerol to acrolein from an aqueous solution of glycerol in the presence of an acid catalyst; (b) purifying the aqueous flux from step (a) to obtain a flux of acrolein containing at least 15 wt % of water relative to the acrolein; (c) causing a reaction of the acrolein flux obtained in step (b) with methylmercaptan in the presence of a catalyst; (d) optionally purifying the product obtained in step (c). The method of the invention can also include a reaction of the product obtained in step (c) or (d) with hydrocyanic acid, or sodium cyanide during a step (e) followed by a subsequent transformation to produce methionine or methionine hydroxyanalogue, which can then optionally be purified. The additional use of methylmercaptan and/or hydrocyanic acid derived from biomass as raw materials in the method according to the invention makes it possible to obtain MMP, methionine or methionine hydroxyanalogue made up of 100% organic carbon from renewable sources.
