A method of determining an orientation α,β of a magnet which is pivotable about a reference position having a predefined position relative to a semiconductor substrate, comprising: a) determining at least two of the following magnetic field gradients: i) a first magnetic field gradient dBx/dx; ii) a second magnetic field gradient dBy/dy; iii) a third magnetic field gradient dBz/dx; iv) a fourth magnetic field gradient dBz/dy; b) determining a first angle α based on at least one of the magnetic field gradients; c) determining a second angle β based on at least one of the magnetic field gradients. A sensor device is configured for performing this method. A sensor system includes such sensor device and a magnet, optionally connected to a joystick.

In a first aspect, a magnetic position sensor system for a magnetic target, includes: (i) a first sensor for measuring in a first sensing region a first magnetic field component Balong a direction x and a second magnetic field component Balong a direction z, orthogonal to x; (ii) a second sensor for measuring in a second sensing region—aligned to the first sensing region along the x-direction—a first magnetic field component Balong the x-direction and a second magnetic field component Balong the z-direction; and (iii) an axially-magnetized ring magnet arranged under the first and second sensing region such that an axial direction of the ring magnet is substantially parallel to the z-direction and—in operation—a position of the ring magnet with respect to the first and second sensing regions is fixed.

Magnetic position sensor system

A linear or angular position sensor system comprising a magnetic structure for generating a magnetic field, and a sensor device movable relative to the magnetic structure. The sensor device comprises a plurality of sensor elements for measuring at least two characteristics of said magnetic field, and a processing circuit for determining a linear or angular position of the sensor device relative to the magnetic structure in accordance with a predefined function of these characteristics (e.g. components or gradients). The magnetic structure comprises one or more grooves, having a shape and size which can be described by a limited set of parameters, having values optimized to reduce a maximum error between the actual position of the sensor device, and the calculated position based on said predefined function, by at least a factor of 2.

A sensor system comprises a magnetic field generator and a sensor device arranged at a distance from said magnetic field generator and adapted for measuring or determining at least one magnetic field component and/or at least one magnetic field gradient component. The magnetic field generator comprises a multi-pole magnet having a number N of pole pairs that are axially magnetized to generate an N-pole magnetic field that is substantially rotationally symmetric around an axis. The magnet comprises a plurality of grooves and/or elongate protrusions that are arranged in a rotationally symmetric pattern around the axis to provide a substantially constant magnetic field gradient in a central region around said axis.

Sensor system comprising offaxis insensitive multipole magnet

A magnetic sensor arrangement, comprising: a magnet assembly and a magnetic sensor; the magnet assembly forming a magnetic field having at least two magnetic field components with different angular periodicities at the location of the magnetic sensor and the magnetic sensor including means for sensing the different magnetic field components to produce at least a first and a second sensor element signal; and a computing element for receiving the at least first and second sensor element signals and combining them to produce a unique angular position of the magnet relative to the sensor. A method of determining a unique angular position is also provided.
