Wavelength division multiplexing devices, and methods of forming the same, include a coupling lens and a waveguide, the lens being positioned over a mirror formed in a transmission path of the waveguide. The mirror reflects incoming light signals out of the transmission path through the lens and further reflects light signals coming from the lens and into the transmission path. An optical chip is positioned near a focal length of the lens. The optical chip has an optical filter configured to transmit a light signal at a first wavelength and to reflect received light signals at wavelengths other than the first wavelength.

A micro-mirror array for optical coupling in a waveguide array including, a transparent body having a slanted portion, a sidewall portion, and a bottom portion, the sidewall portion and the bottom portion each respectively facing the slanted portion, and wherein a complementary shape of a conventional form off-axis mirror is arranged on the slanted portion, and a reflective coating on at least a portion of the complementary shape.

Off-axis micro-mirror arrays for optical coupling in polymer waveguides

An optical interconnect structure and method are provided. The optical interconnect structure includes a plate on which a mirror is formed. The optical interconnect structure further includes a waveguide structure comprising a waveguide core and an opening. The plate is mounted on the waveguide structure such the mirror is inserted in the opening for light coupling (i) from the waveguide core and to an optical element positioned on the plate and (ii) to the waveguide core from the optical element positioned on the plate.

A method for fabricating an optical waveguide crossing structure. The method includes preparing a plate structure including a crossing part array and a guiding part array, each crossing part of the crossing part array being arranged at a gap from a plurality of guiding parts of the guiding part array. The method further includes preparing a waveguide structure including a first waveguide core array, a second waveguide core array and a tank, the tank being formed by removing a crossing region of the first waveguide core array and the second waveguide core array. The method further includes injecting an underfill into the tank. The method further includes depositing the plate structure on the waveguide structure so that the crossing part array and the guiding part array are inserted in the tank. The method further includes curing the underfill.

Optical waveguide crossing structure

A wavelength division multiplexing filter and methods of forming the same include an optical dielectric filter having multiple dielectric layers. The optical dielectric filter has a high reflectivity at a first wavelength and a high transmissivity at one or more additional wavelengths. The dielectric layers include a structure of layers following the pattern L-[M/2-H-M/2]N-L, where L layers include a first dielectric material, H layers include a second dielectric material, M/2 layers have a mixture of the first and second dielectric material and have a thickness half that needed to provide reflectivity at the first wavelength, and N is a number of repetitions for the structure in brackets.

Micro-filter structures for wavelength division multiplexing in polymer waveguides

A wavelength division multiplexing filter and methods of forming the same include an optical dielectric filter formed on a substrate and having a plurality of dielectric layers. The optical dielectric filter has a high reflectivity at a first wavelength and a high transmissivity at one or more additional wavelengths. The substrate has a high thermal tolerance, such that the substrate is not damaged by temperatures at which the plurality of dielectric layers are formed.

Optical systems for wavelength division multiplexing and wavelength division demultiplexing with a multi-core fiber, and methods of their fabrication, are disclosed. The systems include a coupling mirror with a plurality of angled surfaces that are configured to direct light to or from different cores of a multi-core fiber. In addition, the multiplexer systems can further include laser chips for generating light, while the demultiplexer systems can include photodiode arrays for detecting light from the multi-core fiber. The systems can also include a guiding structure comprising filters/micro-mirrors to direct light from the lasers or to the photodiodes.

Wavelength division multiplexing with multi-core fiber

Methods for wavelength filtering and structures for accomplishing the same. Wavelength filtering includes forming grooves in a waveguide to define angled surfaces in a path of the waveguide; forming a reflective layer on the angled surfaces; depositing cladding material on top of the waveguide and on the angled surfaces; forming a filter layer on an active region of an opto-electronic device, which transmits a single wavelength and reflects other wavelengths used; depositing the opto-electrical device on the cladding layer such that the filter layer is aligned with a point of incidence of a light beam reflected from the reflective layer; and electrically bonding the opto-electronic device to vias in the waveguide structure.

Double mirror structure for wavelength division multiplexing with polymer waveguides

Optical systems for wavelength division multiplexing and wavelength division demultiplexing with a multi-core fiber, and methods of their fabrication, are disclosed. In accordance with one method for fabricating an optical system for wavelength division demultiplexing, a resin is molded to define an element with a plurality of angled surfaces. Further, a plurality of filters are formed around the element, where each of the filters is configured to filter at least one respective wavelength and transmit at least one other respective wavelength. In addition, reflective surfaces are formed on the plurality of angled surfaces. Moreover, an additional resin is formed over the element and over the plurality of filters to complete a guiding structure. Further, arrays of photodiodes are affixed to the guiding structure below the plurality of filters. Alternatively, for demultiplexing embodiments, sets of laser chips are affixed to the guiding structure.

A core intersection in an optical waveguide formed of a plurality of cores and a clad that surrounds the cores is disclosed, the structure characterized in that the same material as that of the cores is added to two planes, upper and lower planes, of each of core intersection spaces where the plurality of cores intersect (instead of using a clad material). The structure of a core intersection in an optical waveguide formed of a plurality of cores and a clad is disclosed, the structure characterized in that four planes that divide (isolate) each of core intersection spaces where the plurality of cores intersect, that is, four discontinuity spaces between the core intersection space and the cores connected thereto, are filled with the same material as that of the clad (instead of using a core material so that the core intersection space is seamlessly connected to surrounding core intersection spaces).
