In an example of recording medium identification method, a digital image of a line or a dot printed on a recording medium with a printer is captured by an image sensor. From the digital image, a microprocessor (operatively connected to the image sensor), digitally measures a width of the line, a diameter of the dot, an area of the dot, or a perimeter of the dot. The microprocessor identifies a type of the recording medium based on the width, the diameter, the area, or the perimeter. In response to the identification of the type of the recording medium, a print setting for the type of the recording medium is selected.

Recording medium identification

The present disclosure is drawn to ink compositions including an aqueous liquid vehicle, from 1 wt % to 9 wt % pigment dispersed in the aqueous liquid vehicle by an ionic polymeric dispersant associated with pigment, from 0.5 wt % to 5 wt % non-ionic polymeric binder having a weight average molecular weight from 400 Mw to 20,000 Mw, and from 0.1 wt % to 1.5 wt % monovalent salt.

Ink compositions

An example of an ink supply includes an ink chamber containing a liquid ink, a salt chamber containing a salt solution, a separator positioned between the liquid ink and the salt solution, and a release mechanism. The separator completely separates the liquid ink from the salt solution prior to the release mechanism being triggered. The release mechanism has a triggered position and a retracted position. The triggered position causes the separator to at least partially open, and enables the liquid ink and the salt solution to be combined to form a mixture.

Ink supply

The present disclosure is drawn to ink compositions including an aqueous liquid vehicle, from 1 wt % to 9 wt % pigment dispersed in the aqueous liquid vehicle by a polymer dispersant associated with pigment, from 0.5 wt % to 5 wt % polymeric binder particles having an average particle size from 25 nm to 500 nm and a D10 particle size of 20 nm or more, and from 0.1 wt % to 1.5 wt % monovalent salt.

The present disclosure is drawn to an ink composition including an aqueous liquid vehicle, from 2 wt % to 7 wt % self-dispersed pigment dispersed in the aqueous liquid vehicle, and from 0.5 wt % to 5 wt % acidic polymeric binder particles having an acid number from 30 to 200 and a particle size from 1 nm to 100 nm dispersed in the aqueous liquid vehicle. The ink composition can also include from 0.1 wt % to 0.75 wt % monovalent salt solubilized in the aqueous liquid vehicle. The self-dispersed pigment to monovalent salt weight ratio in the ink composition can be from 3:1 to 50:1, for example.

The present disclosure is drawn to a dispersed magenta pigment blend, including a first pigment including Pigment Violet 19 and Pigment Red 122, or Pigment Red 282; and a second pigment including Pigment Red 150. The weight ratio of the first pigment to the second pigment can be from 50:50 to 80:20 by pigment solids content.

Magenta inks

The present disclosure is drawn to a pigment-based inkjet ink and methods. The inkjet ink includes water; from 2 wt % to 9 wt % pigment solids; from 0.05 wt % to 2 wt % of an acetylenic diol non-ionic surfactant; from 0.05 wt % to 2 wt % of a second surfactant. The second surfactant can be a polysorbate having at least 50% lipophilic oleic acid groups and having an HLB value of less than 15, or a C-Cpolyoxyethylene glycol ether having an ethylene oxide number less than 20, or a perfluoropolyether including a polyethylene glycol primary alcohol or diol. The inkjet ink also includes from 5 wt % to 50 wt % of an organic solvent system comprising triethylene glycol and a cyclic amide.

Pigment-based inkjet inks

The present disclosure is drawn to a magenta pigment blend, a magenta ink, and a method of formulation a magenta pigment blend. The magenta pigment blend can be a first pigment including a solid solution of Pigment Violet 19 and Pigment Red 122, or Pigment Red 282; and a second pigment including Pigment Red 150. The weight ratio of the first pigment to the second pigment can be from 50:50 to 80:20 by pigment solids content.

The present disclosure is drawn to inkjet inks and related methods. The inkjet ink includes water, from 5 wt % to 50 wt % of an organic solvent system, from 2 wt % to 9 wt % pigment solids, from 0.1 wt % to 3 wt % polyurethane binder, and from 0.4 wt % to 1.5 wt % of an oleyl or stearyl type polyoxyethylene glycol ether surfactant.

Methods, apparatus, systems and articles of manufacture to control operation of a printer based on whether a marker is detected in a pigment ink are disclosed. Example apparatus include an optical sensor to detect a marker in a vehicle component of the pigment ink. The vehicle is depleted of a pigment component. The apparatus also includes a controller to control operation of the printer based on whether the marker is detected. The apparatus can also include an authorizer to determine whether the printer in which the pigment ink is installed is authorized to use the pigment ink having the marker. The controller of the apparatus is to control operation of the printer by transmitting a control signal to a print head processor to halt printing operations. The apparatus can additionally include a filter to deplete the vehicle component of the pigment component.

Controlling operation of a printer based on detection of an optical marker in a pigment ink

The present disclosure is drawn to methods and compositions directed at durable ink-jet inks. As such, an ink-jet ink can have a liquid vehicle, a colorant dispersed or dissolved in the liquid vehicle, a high Tg polymer having a Tg of at least 45.degree. C. dispersed in the liquid vehicle, and a near-infrared absorbing dye in the liquid vehicle. The ink can be formulated such that when printed on a substrate and irradiated with a near-infrared energy source, the near-infrared absorbing dye generates enough heat to uniformly melt the high Tg polymer, thereby enhancing the durability of ink-jet ink printed on the substrate.

Ink-jet inks having polymers and near-infrared absorbing dyes

An ink is disclosed. The ink composition includes an ink vehicle, a colorant, and a fluorosurfactant, wherein the fluorosurfactant is a polymer having the general formula: wherein p is any integer, q is any integer, Zand Zare each fluorine or any functional group, and R, R, Rare each fluorine, any alkyl group, or any functional group, and wherein R, R, R, Z, and Zare not all fluorine and the fluorosurfactant lowers the surface tension of the ink vehicle. A method for improving a property of an ink is also disclosed.

Perfluoropolyethers as ink additives

A water-soluble phthalocyanine dye or naphthalocyanine dye with near-infrared absorption comprises at least one complexed unit. Each unit comprises a phthalocyanine or a naphthalocyanine moiety and a metal atom complexed thereto and having a valency of at least three, with two valencies complexed to the phthalocynanine ring or the naphthalocyanine ring, each unit joined to another through a fused ring, at least one valency attached to water-soluble axial ligands. The dyes to may be employed in inkjet inks in conjunction with colorants.

Phthalocyanines and naphthalocyanines with near-IR absorptions for inkjet inks

The present disclosure includes naphthalocyanine dyes or fused naphthalocyanine dyes represented by one of the general structures I to XV; inkjet ink formulations including the naphthalocyanine dyes; and a detection system () including the dyes.

Naphthalocyanine dye and ink containing the same

A water-soluble phthalocyanine dye or naphthalocyanine dye with near-infrared absorption comprises at least one complexed unit. Each unit comprises a phthalocyanine or a naphthalocyanine moiety and, optionally, a metal atom complexed thereto and, if present, having a valency of from 1 to 5, with two valencies complexed to the phthalocyanine ring or the naphthalocyanine ring. Each unit has two linker moieties on opposite sides or adjacent sides of the unit, wherein water-soluble groups are present on at least one of the linkers, on the metal atom, and optionally on the phthalocyanine or naphthalocyanine moiety.
