A method of preparing a calcium sulfonate having at least a TBN of 500 where the method comprises reacting CaO, Ca(OH).sub.2 and H.sub.2 O, and synthetic monoalkylbenzene sulfonate and synthetic dialkylbenzene sulfonate in certain molar ratios, respectively, for a sufficient length of time to produce the overbased calcium sulfonate.

Overbased calcium sulfonate

Lubricating oils contain an overbased oil-soluble composition prepared by adding water to a heated reaction mixture containing an alkaline earth metal halide, an alkaline earth metal salt of an alkaryl sulfonate, a hydrocarbon diluent-solvent, a lower alkanol, and an alkali metal oxide, and thereafter passing carbon dioxide through the reaction mixture.

Method of preparing overbased calcium sulfonates

A method of preparing a calcium sulfonate having a TBN of 500 where the method comprises reacting CaO, Ca(OH).sub.2 and H.sub.2 O, and synthetic and natural sulfonates in certain molar ratios, respectively, for a sufficient length of time to produce the overbased calcium sulfonate.
