An earth-boring tool system that includes a drilling assembly for drilling a wellbore and a surface control unit. The surface control unit includes a prediction system that is configured to train a hybrid physics and machine-learning model based on input data, provide, via the hybrid model, a predictive model representing a rate of penetration of an earth-boring tool and wear of the earth-boring tool during a planned drilling operation, provide one or more recommendations of drilling parameters based on the predictive model, utilize the one or more recommendations in a drilling operation, receive real-time data from the drilling operation, retrain the hybrid model based on a combination of the input data and the real-time data, and provide, via the retrained model, an updated predictive model of a rate of penetration of an earth-boring tool and wear of the earth-boring tool during a remainder of the planned drilling operation.

Earth-boring tool rate of penetration and wear prediction system and related methods

A simulation system that receives a first plurality of inputs including at least one drilling parameter, at least one lithology parameter, and at least one earth-boring tool option; provides the first plurality of inputs to a cluster system; receives simulation data from the cluster system derived from a plurality of simulations of drilling operations utilizing the first plurality of inputs; analyzes the simulation data to generate a predictive algorithm for simulating drilling operations; receives a well plan including data related to a planned trajectory of a borehole; and utilizes the predictive algorithm to select a suitable earth-boring tool and suitable drilling parameters to achieve the planned trajectory of a borehole.

A method of predicting behavior of a drilling assembly includes: generating a mathematical representation of a geometry of each of a plurality of components of a drilling assembly, the plurality of components including a plurality of cutters and one or more additional components configured to at least one of: support the plurality of cutters and operably connect the plurality of cutters to the drill string, the one or more additional components including a drill bit crown; simulating one or more operating conditions incident on the drilling assembly representation, and simulating an interaction between the plurality of components and an earth formation; and predicting physical responses of the drilling assembly representation to the one or more conditions.

Modeling and simulation of complete drill strings

A method and system of predicting behavior of a drill bit is disclosed, including generating a mathematical representation of a characteristic of at least one of a plurality of components of a drill bit, the plurality of components including at least one moveable cutter; at least one moveable rubbing element; and at least one moveable gage pad; simulating one or more operating conditions incident on the mathematical representation, and simulating an interaction between the plurality of components and an earth formation; and predicting physical responses of the mathematical representation to the one or more operating conditions.

Modeling and simulation of drill strings with adaptive systems

A self-adjusting earth-boring tool includes a body carrying cutting elements and an actuation device disposed at least partially within the body. The actuation device may include a first fluid chamber, a second fluid chamber, a first reciprocating member, and a second reciprocating member. The first and second reciprocating members may divide portions of the first fluid chamber from portions of the second fluid chamber. A connection member may be attached to both of the first and second reciprocating members and may have a drilling element removably coupled thereto. A first fluid flow path may extend from the second fluid chamber to the first fluid chamber. A second fluid flow path may extend from the first fluid chamber to the second fluid chamber.

Self-adjusting earth-boring tools and related systems and methods

Earth-boring tools may include a body and a passively adjustable, aggressiveness-modifying member secured to the body. The passively adjustable, aggressiveness-modifying member may be movable between a first position in which the earth-boring tool exhibits a first aggressiveness and a second position in which the earth-boring tool exhibits a second, different aggressiveness responsive to forces acting on the passively adjustable, aggressiveness-modifying member.

An actively controlled self-adjusting earth-boring tool includes a body carrying cutting elements and an actuation device disposed at least partially within the body. The actuation device may include a first fluid chamber, a second fluid chamber, and a reciprocating member dividing the first fluid chamber from the second fluid chamber. A connection member may be attached to the reciprocating member and may have a drilling or bearing element connected thereto. A first fluid flow path may extend from the second fluid chamber to the first fluid chamber. A second fluid flow path may extend from the first fluid chamber to the second fluid chamber. A rate controller may control a flowrate of a hydraulic fluid through the first and second fluid flow paths. The rate controller may include an electromagnet, and the flowrates of the hydraulic fluid may be adjusted by adjusting fluid properties of the hydraulic fluid.

Actively controlled self-adjusting bits and related systems and methods

A drill bit includes a bit body; a pad associated with the bit body; and a rate control device coupled to the pad that extends from a bit surface at a first rate and retracts from an extended position to a retracted position at a second rate in response to external force applied onto the pad. The rate control device includes a piston for applying a force on the pad; a biasing member that applies a force on the piston to extend the pad at the first rate; a fluid chamber associated with the piston; and a pressure management device for controlling a fluid pressure within the fluid chamber.

A drill bit includes a bit body; a pad associated with the bit body; a rate control device coupled to the pad that extends from a bit surface at a first rate and retracts from an extended position to a retracted position at a second rate in response to external force applied onto the pad. The rate control device includes a piston for applying a force on the pad; a biasing member that applies a force on the piston to extend the pad at the first rate; a fluid chamber associated with the piston; and a pressure management device for controlling a fluid pressure within the fluid chamber.

A drill bit and a method of drilling a wellbore utilizing the drill bit is disclosed. The method includes providing a drill bit including a bit body and at least one movable member associated with a lateral extent of the bit body. The method further includes conveying a drill string into a formation, the drill string having the drill bit at the end thereof and drilling the wellbore using the drill string. During drilling, the drill bit can selectively extend the at least one moveable member from the lateral extent of the bit body at a first rate and selectively retract the at least one moveable member to a retracted position at a second rate that is less than the first rate.

A method for estimating a location for disposing a tool in a drill tubular having a drill bit includes performing a modal analysis of the drill tubular to determine natural eigenfrequencies and corresponding eigenmodes of torsional oscillations of the model and selecting a predominant natural eigenfrequency and corresponding eigenmode from the determined natural eigenfrequencies and corresponding eigenmodes. The method further includes performing a forced modal analysis of the drill tubular at the predominant eigenfrequency with a force or moment acting on the drill bit to provide a correlation between forced torsional deflection amplitude and position and estimating the position to be within a range of positions wherein a vibration qualification of the tool is greater or equal to the torsional deflection amplitude throughout the range.

Bottomhole assembly design method to reduce rotational loads

An apparatus for reducing vibration includes a damping assembly configured to be fixedly attached to a downhole component. The downhole component is configured to rotate within a borehole in an earth formation, and the damping assembly has a damping frequency that is tuned relative to a selected natural vibration frequency of the rotating downhole component to reduce vibration due to component rotation.

In one aspect, a method of determining the presence of whirl for a rotating tool is disclosed that in one embodiment includes obtaining measurements (a) of a parameter relating to the whirl of the tool along a first axis and measurements (a) of the parameter along a second axis of the tool, determining a first whirl in a time domain for the tool using aand ameasurements, determining a second whirl rate for the tool in a frequency domain from aand ameasurements and determining the presence of the whirl from the first whirl rate and second whirl rate. The method further quantifies the whirl of the tool from the first and second whirl rates.
