An energy storage system and method employ electrolysis to convert excess electrical energy into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas stored in cryogenic flux capacitor units. When needed, the hydrogen and oxygen are liberated from the CFCs and mixed with supercritical COand combusted in a combustion chamber without any nitrogen or air present to form a heated mixture of water and sCO2 that drives a turbine that creates energy that is returned to the power grid. The water in the sCO2 mixture is then extracted and returned to a reservoir for electrolysis when needed again, resulting in a closed system for storing electrical energy.

System and method for hydrogen-based energy storage

A power generation system burns a fuel in a gas in a combustion chamber, producing one or more combustion products and heating a working fluid, preferably supercritical CO, that is chemically the same as a combustion product. The working fluid is mixed with the combustion products to form a combustion output mixture which is used in a turbine to drive a shaft of the turbine connected with a generator, producing electricity. The turbine outputs an exhaust that goes to a working fluid recycling system that connects the turbine outlet with the combustion chamber. The fluid recycling system has a radial compressor that receives and pressurizes the exhaust mixture and sends it to a chamber that has a bleed outlet and a recycling outlet. The recycling outlet transmits a recycled portion of the exhaust mixture to the combustion chamber, and the bleed outlet carries an excess portion of the exhaust mixture that is not to be recycled to an extraction system that removes it from the power generation system for use in other applications.

Compressor flow extraction apparatus and methods for supercritical COoxy-combustion power generation system

A power generation system includes a turbine having an outlet. A high temperature recuperator has an inlet and is connected to the turbine outlet. A low temperature recuperator is connected to the high temperature recuperator. Each of the high and low temperature recuperators include a plurality of matrix panels interconnected together that define hot fluid channels and cold fluid channels arranged adjacent to each other in a counterflow and stair-step configuration. A compressor is connected to the low temperature recuperator and turbine.

Power generation system using closed or semi-closed Brayton cycle recuperator

A heat transfer augmented channel wall includes a bulk portion, a wall surface and a plurality of multi-portion indented features extending from the wall surface into the bulk portion. The multi-portion indented features include a first indented portion and a second indented portion that are divided by a ridge which disrupts fluid flow between first and second indented portions. The ridge has a height that is less than a maximum depth of the multi-portion indented features.

Heat transfer augmented fluid flow surfaces

The subject invention pertains to a method and apparatus for cooling. In a specific embodiment, the subject invention relates to a lightweight, compact, reliable, and efficient cooling system. The subject system can provide heat stress relief to individuals operating under, for example, hazardous conditions, or in elevated temperatures, while wearing protective clothing. The subject invention also relates to a condenser for transferring heat from a refrigerant to an external fluid in thermal contact with the condenser. The subject condenser can have a heat transfer surface and can be designed for an external fluid, such as air, to flow across the heat transfer surface and allow the transfer of heat from heat transfer surface to the external fluid. In a specific embodiment, the flow of the external fluid is parallel to the heat transfer surface. In another specific embodiment, the heat transfer surface can incorporate surface enhancements which enhance the transfer of heat from the heat transfer surface to the external fluid. In another specific embodiment, an outer layer can be positioned above the heat transfer surface to create a volume between the heat transfer surface and the outer layer through which the external fluid can flow.

Method and apparatus for highly efficient compact vapor compression cooling

A heat exchanger includes at least one hot fluid flow channel comprising a first plurality of open cell porous elements having first gaps therebetween for flowing a hot fluid in a flow direction and at least one cold fluid flow channel comprising a second plurality of open cell porous elements having second gaps therebetween for flowing a cold fluid in a countercurrent flow direction relative to the flow direction. The thermal conductivity of the porous elements is at least 10 W/m&#xb7;K. A separation member is interposed between the hot and cold flow channels for isolating flow paths associated these flow channels. The first and second plurality of porous elements at least partially overlap one another to form a plurality of heat transfer pairs which transfer heat from respective ones of the first porous elements to respective ones of the second porous elements through the separation member.

Thermally conductive porous element-based recuperators

A high speed centrifugal compressor for compressing fluids includes a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) having a hollow shaft, the being supported on its ends by ball bearing supports. A permanent magnet core is embedded inside the shaft. A stator with a winding is located radially outward of the shaft. The PMSM includes a rotor including at least one impeller secured to the shaft or integrated with the shaft as a single piece. The rotor is a high rigidity rotor providing a bending mode speed of at least 100,000 RPM which advantageously permits implementation of relatively low-cost ball bearing supports.

The subject invention pertains to a method and apparatus for high heat flux heat transfer. The subject invention can be utilized to transfer heat from a heat source to a coolant such that the transferred heat can be effectively transported to another location. Examples of heat sources from which heat can be transferred from include, for example, fluids and surfaces. The coolant to which the heat is transferred can be sprayed onto a surface which is in thermal contact with the heat source, such that the coolant sprayed onto the surface in thermal contact with the heat absorbs heat from the surface and carries the absorbed heat away as the coolant leaves the surface. The surface can be, for example, the surface of an interface plate in thermal contact with the heat source or a surface integral with the heat source. The coolant sprayed onto the surface can initially be a liquid and remain a liquid after absorbing the heat, or can in part or in whole be converted to a gas or vapor after absorbing the heat. The coolant can be sprayed onto the surface, for example, as a stream of liquid after being atomized, or in other ways which allow the coolant to contact the surface and absorb heat. Once the heat is absorbed by the coolant, the coolant can be transported to another location so as to transport the absorbed heat as well.

Method and apparatus for high heat flux heat transfer

Novel micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS)-based sensors for use in ultra-high temperature environments are disclosed. The MEMS-based sensors are derived from a class of polymer-derived ceramics selected from the group consisting of SiCN, SiBCN and SiAlCN. The materials of construction are such that, the sensors are capable of accurate, real-time, on-line and in-situ monitoring, suppression of combustion oscillations and detailed measurements in operating structures that have temperatures of from about 1500&#xb0; K to about 2000&#xb0; K, extreme pressures/turbulence and harsh chemical off gases. When the novel sensors are mounted on a hot gas path wall, such as, at a combustor exit, there can be a continuous monitoring of pressure pulses/oscillations, wall shear stress, temperature and surface heat flux.
