A multiple output synchronous generator in accordance with the instant invention comprises a stator having a first stator winding having a number of poles p and a second stator winding having a number of poles 2*p*n where p and n are any whole numbers, the first and second stator windings being wound utilizing a 60.degree. phase belt winding configuration such that the first stator winding is magnetically decoupled from the second stator winding preventing interaction therebetween. The generator additionally comprises a rotor rotatably disposed within the stator defining an airgap therebetween. The rotor has a first field winding of a first polarity and a second field winding having a second number of windings wound thereon for generating a flux across the airgap such that the flux induces a voltage in the first and second stator windings. These first and second field windings are configured such that the flux generated in the airgap comprises a fundamental component and an even harmonic component of substantially equal magnitude. The winding configuration of the stator and rotor insure that only the fundamental flux component and odd harmonics induce a voltage in the first stator winding, and only the even harmonic component and even harmonics induce a voltage in the second stator winding. The magnetic decoupling of the first and second stator windings ensures that harmonic distortion induced in the second output by external equipment powered thereby is not reflected in the first output, thereby maintaining a 'clean-bus' for use by utilization equipment sensitive to such distortion.

Multiple output decoupled synchronous generator and electrical system

An electric power starter generator system comprises a synchronous generator and an induction motor/generator mutually coupled to a shaft being driven to an external prime mover. The synchronous generator and the induction motor/generator are driven by the shaft at the same speed. The system includes a rectifier/inverter having ac terminals coupled to the output of the induction motor/generator, and dc terminals coupled to a dc bus. This rectifier/inverter allows bi-directional power flow to effectuate both power generation as well as electric start of the prime mover. The synchronous generator is excited by a commonly driven permanent magnet generator and a modulated exciter field control. The induction motor/generator is self-exciting through the rectifier/inverter once a voltage is established on the dc bus. The establishment of this voltage may be accomplished by a battery, or by connection of the synchronous generator's output to the input of the rectifier/inverter through a poly-phase contactor. This contactor also allows cross connection of either machine to either distribution bus if one of the machines were to fail, or if the loading on that particular bus became excessive.

Dual output synchronous-induction starting/generating system

A summing transformer having a core structure, first primary and secondary windings wound on the core structure for establishing a rotating electromagnetic field when the first primary winding is energized, and second primary and secondary windings wound on the core structure for establishing a rotating electromagnetic field when the second primary winding is energized, and wherein the second first and second secondary windings are connected together so that voltages induced therein are added.

A permanent magnet generator having a plurality of permanent magnet generator units which produce a controlled output potential by mutual magnetic flux linkage between the permanent magnet generator units to produce the controlled output potential in accordance with the invention includes a plurality of permanent magnet rotors (20 and 22) mounted on a drive shaft (26) with at least one of the rotors being rotatable with respect to the drive shaft to vary an angular position of the at least one of the rotors relative to the shaft to produce a mutual variable magnitude magnetic axial field extending parallel to the drive shaft; at least one stator (26, 28, 72) disposed at a position axially offset from the plurality of rotors which is magnetically coupled to the variable magnitude permanent magnet axially field; and a mechanism (46, 48) responsive to a stator fault for angularly positioning the rotors relative to each other so that the permanent magnetic field coupled to the at least one stator is zero.

Axial gap dual permanent magnet generator

A variable reluctance motor (10, 100, 200) for providing holding torque in accordance with the invention includes a magnetically permeable rotor (12); a stator (18) axially aligned with the rotor having at least one phase winding (22) for producing a magnetic field causing the rotor to rotate; and a first cylindrical magnet (26) mounted coaxial with and outboard from a first side of the rotor which creates a permanent magnetic field coupling the rotor to the magnet to provide holding torque.

An alternating current generating system (40) for an air frame producing an output potential in accordance with the invention includes a generator (42) for generating current having a rotor (46) mounted on a shaft (50) which is rotatably driven and a stator (58) from which current is outputted; a variable reluctance generator (44) for generating alternating current outputted from a stator (62) and having a rotor (48) mounted on the shaft to cause alternating current to be generated by the stator and a voltage regulator (84), coupled to the generator for generating current, to an output of (88) of the variable reluctance generator and to an excitation winding (86) of the variable reluctance generator, for producing excitation current applied to the stator of the variable reluctance generator to regulate the voltage outputted by the variable reluctance generator.

Integrated variable reluctance generator for air frames

A magnetic bearing (10) in accordance with the invention includes a rotatably supported member (14) having a cylindrical magnet (12) with first and second ends which respectively are first and second magnetic poles with a magnetic field produced by the magnet having a uniform strength around a circumference of the first and second ends; a first sensor (34 or 36) for sensing a direction and amount of radial movement of the rotatable member along a first axis (54 or 56) from a uniform spacing with respect to an annulus (35) surrounding the rotatable member and producing a first signal proportional to the direction and amount of movement along the first axis; and a first electromagnetic circuit (16 to 18) producing an electromagnetic field proportional to the first signal which is additive to the magnetic field along the first axis extending in a radial direction of increased radial spacing between the annulus and the rotatable member and which is subtractive from the magnetic field along the first axis extending in a radial direction of decreased spacing.

Magnetic bearing

A hybrid electrical generator (20) is disclosed. The hybrid electrical generator has a permanent magnet generator (22) having a permanent magnet rotor (32) mounted on a shaft (26) with the permanent magnet generator providing an output voltage over an operating range which falls in response to an increasing electrical load. The hybrid electrical generator has a variable reluctance generator (24) having a rotor (34) mounted on the shaft with excitation of a stator (30) being provided by the permanent magnet generator. The variable reluctance generator provides an output voltage which varies in response to an increasing load over an operating range. A voltage regulator, responsive to the electrical outputs of the generators, controls the output voltage of the variable reluctance generator to provide a regulated output voltage which is substantially constant independent of electrical load over an operating range.

Hybrid permanent magnet and variable reluctance generator

A three phase inverter (40) is disclosed for use with loads (100) which are unbalanced. A transformer (80) having primary windings (82), (84) and (86) which are respectively connected to phase outputs (52, 54 and 56) has a secondary having individual windings (88, 90 and 92) connected in a delta configuration which minimizes the flow of unbalanced current in the unbalanced load. A second embodiment utilizes a transformer in an interconnected configuration. A neutral connecting the conductive switches to the load is unnecessary with the invention.

In order to optimize the electrical performance in motors in terms of improved efficiency, power factor, and reduced current, a position detecting apparatus utilizes a first magnetic sensing device for accurately determining the angular position of a rotor and a second magnetic sensing device for absolutely determining the angular position of the rotor. The first magnetic sensing device includes a first target operatively associated with the rotor so as to rotate therewith and also includes a first sensor disposed at a fixed distance from the first target independent of the absolute angular position of the rotor to define a first air gap therebetween and a first magnet is disposed in proximity to the first target and the first sensor to create a first magnetic field in the first air gap. With this arrangement, the first sensor cooperates with the first target to accurately determine the angular position of the rotor by detecting incremental variations in the first magnetic field in the first air gap. The second magnetic sensing device includes a second target operatively associated with the rotor so as to rotate therewith. A second sensor is disposed at a variable distance from the second target dependent upon the absolute angular position of the rotor to define a second air gap therebetween, and the second magnetic sensing device also includes a second magnet disposed in proximity to the second target and the second sensor to create a second magnetic field in the second air gap. With this arrangement, the second sensor cooperates with the second target to absolutely determine the angular position of the rotor by detecting continuous variations in the second magnetic field in the second air gap.

A motor winding transformer circuit is coupled to motor windings and provides an output signal representative of the magnitude and direction of the real current present in the motor windings. A rotor speed/position sensing circuit provides an output signal representative of the motor speed and direction.
