The present disclosure relates to an industrial device, such as a drill bit that may be fabricated by performing a first coupling process that includes activating an attachment material between a first cutter element and a first recess of a bit body, monitoring a temperature associated with the first cutter element by a camera, and adjusting one or more parameters associated with the laser in response to output from the camera. The process may be repeated for a plurality of cutter elements. The disclosure further includes the process and a system to perform the process.

A disclosed example embodiment includes a drill bit used to form wellbores in subterranean formations. The drill bit includes a drill bit body for coupling to a lower end of a drill string. The drill bit body includes at least one support arm having an inwardly extending journal with a journal bearing having at least one radially reduced pocket extending at least partially circumferentially around the journal bearing including a load side of the journal bearing. At least one rotary cutter assembly is rotatably mounted to the journal. A plurality of cutting elements is disposed on the at least one rotary cutter assembly. At least two independent hardmetal pads are positioned within the at least one radially reduced pocket such that the hardmetal pads have a gap disposed therebetween.

A wellbore formation system includes a downhole cutting tool having a body and at least one cutting element. A sensor is coupled to the downhole cutting tool, and the sensor includes a transmitter configured to transmit a signal prior to wear on a portion of the downhole cutting tool reaching a first amount. The sensor ceases transmission of the signal when the wear on the portion of the downhole cutting tool reaches the first amount.

The present disclosure relates to an industrial device including a PCD element located in a recess of the industrial device. The PCD element and recess may contain an aligned mechanical lock. The device may also include a brazing material located along at least a portion of an interface between the PCD element and the recess. In a more specific embodiment, the industrial device may be an earth-boring drill bit, such as a fixed cutter drill bit, and the PCD element may be PCD cutter. In specific embodiments, the mechanical lock may include at least one ridge located at an end of the PCD element and in an end wall of the recess, at least one ridge located along a side of the PCD element and in a side wall of the recess, or at least an upper wall of the recess.

A well tool can include multiple sections, one section having a mating weld surface formed thereon, and another section having another mating weld surface formed thereon. Engagement between the mating weld surfaces can prevent lateral displacement of the well tool sections relative to each other. The mating weld surfaces are welded to each other. A method of constructing a well tool can include engaging a mating weld surface on a section of the well tool with another mating weld surface on another section of the well tool, an interface between the mating weld surfaces being inclined relative to a longitudinal axis of the well tool extending through the sections, and welding the mating weld surfaces to each other along the interface.

A hardfacing is provided to protect surfaces of drill bits and other downhole tools. The hardfacing may include tungsten carbide particles or pellets formed with an optimum weight percentage of binding material and dispersed within and bonded to a matrix deposit. The tungsten carbide particles may be formed by sintering or other appropriate techniques. The tungsten carbide particles may have generally spherical shapes, partially spherical shapes or non-spherical shapes.

Using inserts which are welded in place allows the use of hardfacing in the immediate vicinity of the inserts. Areas of high wear, such as cutting structures and gage areas, can use a combination of ultra-hard inserts with hardfacing for protection against wear. The inserts slows wear, while the hardfacing prevents erosion around the inserts.
