A ball striking device, such as a golf club head, includes a face having a ball striking surface, an inner surface opposite the ball striking surface, and a thickness defined between the ball striking surface and the inner surface, and a body connected to the face and extending rearward from the face. The face has a modulus gradient across the thickness of the face, such that the modulus of the face varies at different distances from the ball striking surface. The face may also include at least one of an insert, a composite material, a multi-layered structure, and/or a portion treated by a surface treatment to contribute to the modulus gradient.

Methods and systems are provided for combined direct current and alternating current activation of electroactive polymer devices. The combined direct current and alternating current activation may increase force generation compared to activation using direct current alone. For example, a method for actuating an electroactive polymer device may include providing the electroactive polymer device. The electroactive polymer device may include a first electrode and a second electrode electrically coupled to an electroactive polymer. The method may include applying a direct current across the electroactive polymer via the first and second electrodes. The method may include applying an alternating current across the electroactive polymer. The direct current and the alternating current may be effective to cause actuation of the electroactive polymer device.

Increased force generation in electroactive polymers

An armor panel is formed of a central layer of ballistic tiles, a support plate and a layer of high strength fiber weave. An outer layer of fiber weave formed of two plies of high strength fiber is wrapped around central layer, support plate and layer of high strength fiber weave. An inner layer of fiber weave formed of two plies of high strength fiber is wrapped around central layer. Armor panel is formed by molding.

Armor system with multi-hit capacity and method of manufacture

An electrochemical device comprises one or more anode, cathode, and separator. In some embodiments, the separator is also an electrolyte. In addition it has two or more current collectors. The anode and cathode are between the two current collectors and each is adhered to an adjacent current collector. The separator is between the anode and cathode and adhered to the anode and cathode. The current collectors are a barrier, and are bonded together to create a sealed container for the anode, cathode, and separator. The electrochemical device may be integrated into a composite panel suitable for uses such as structural load bearing panels or sheets for aircraft wings or fuselage, composite armor, torpedo, missile body, consumer electronics, etc. The electrochemical device may include, but is not limited to, energy storage (batteries, supercapacitors), and energy generation (fuel cells).

Multifunctional cell for structural applications

Rotary motion devices () are provided. In one embodiment, the rotary motion devices () may comprise: a mass (); a circumferential component (); a plurality of spokes () connecting the mass () to the circumferential component (), at least one of the spokes () comprising an electroactive polymer, wherein: the at least one spoke () has at least one input electrode and is configured to deflect upon application of an electrical potential across the at least one input electrode, and the rotary motion device () is configured such that deflection of the at least one spoke () causes the mass () to move, thereby causing the rotary motion device () to become off balance with respect to gravity, and rotate.

Electroactive polymer (EAP)-based rotary motion devices

A method of treating fibers to improve resistance to high temperatures and relative humidity includes providing poly(p-phenylene-2,6-benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers, exposing the PBO fibers to an atmosphere of supercritical COsaturated with an epoxy silane, i.e. 3-glycidoxypropyl methyldimethoxysilane. The PBO fibers are subjected to a first pressurizing and heating stage at a first temperature (50&#xb0; C.) for a first period of time. The PBO fibers are then subjected to a second pressurizing and heating stage including increasing the temperature to a second temperature (110&#xb0; C.) and holding at the second temperature for an additional period of time. The PBO fibers include 2-5 wt % of 3-glycidoxypropyl methyldimethoxysilane after diffusing the COout of the PBO fibers. The fibers are particularly useful in making lightweight body armor system components.

Rebound control material

This invention relates in general to components of electrochemical devices, and to methods of preparing the components. The components and methods include the use of a composition comprising an ionically conductive polymer and at least one solvent, where the polymer and the solvent are selected based on the thermodynamics of the combination. In one embodiment, the invention relates to a component for an electrochemical device which is prepared from a composition comprising a true solution of an ionically conductive polymer and at least one solvent, the polymer and the at least one solvent being selected such that |&#x3b4; solvent&#x2212;&#x3b4; solute|&#x3c;1, where &#x3b4; solvent is the Hildebrand solubility parameter of the at least one solvent and where &#x3b4; solute is the Hildebrand solubility parameter of the polymer.

Solution based enhancements of fuel cell components and other electrochemical systems and devices

An ionically conductive polymer has the chemical structure 1 as shown herein. Examples of the polymer include 4,4'-(4-(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)butane-2,2-diyl)diphenol, sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone) containing benzimidazole backbone, sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone) containing carboxylic acid backbone, and sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone) containing benzimidazole backbone from carboxylic acid containing sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone). The polymer has intrinsic ion conducting properties so that it is effectively conductive even under low water conditions. In one embodiment, the polymer has an ionic conductivity of at least 1&#xd7;10S/cm at a temperature of 120&#xb0; C. when the polymer is substantially anhydrous.

Ionically conductive polymer for use in electrochemical devices

A composite armor panel and a method for making the armor is disclosed. In one embodiment the armor consists of a plurality of ceramic tiles () individually edge-wrapped () with fiber or edge-wrap fabric, which are further wrapped with a face-wrap fabric, and encapsulated in a hyperelastic polymer material () permeating the fabric and fibers, with a back plate () adhered to the encapsulated tiles. In one embodiment the hyperelastic polymer () is formed from a MDI-polyester or polyether prepolymer, at lease one long-chain polyester polyol comprising ethylene/butylene adipate diol, at least one short-chain diol comprising 1,4-butanediol, and a tin-based catalyst.

Composite armor and method for making composite armor

A proton conducting hydrocarbon-based polymer has acid groups on side chains attached to the main chain, where the acid groups are between 7 and 12 atoms away from the main chain. Another polymer includes a semi-fluorinated aromatic hydrocarbon main chain and side chains that include at least one &#x2014;CF2&#x2014; group and an acid group. Another polymer includes an aromatic hydrocarbon main chain and side chains that include at least one &#x2014;CH2-CF2&#x2014; group and an acid group. Another aromatic polymer includes acid groups attached to both the main chain and the side chains where less than about 65 weight percent of the acid groups are attached to the side chains. Another aromatic polymer includes side chains attached to the main chain that include at least one aryl ring, and acid groups attached to both the main chain and to the aryl groups. Another polymer includes an aliphatic hydrocarbon main chain, side chains that include at least one deactivating aryl ring, and acid groups attached to the deactivating aryl rings. Another aliphatic polymer has side chains that include &#x2014;CF2&#x2014; groups and an acid group. A fuel cell component includes a proton conducting polymer, a water insoluble inorganic material, and a heteropolyacid immobilized on the inorganic material.
