Techniques for operating electronic paper displays of respective electronic devices are described. One set of techniques described below enhances user experience by utilizing multiple different waveform and/or display-update modes when rendering content on these displays. Another set of techniques are able to render lines on electronic paper displays having variable and arbitrary darkness, despite the restricted color depth inherent in these displays. In addition, this disclosure describes techniques for utilizing supersampling to select which shades to render on an electronic paper display of an electronic device. In still other implementations, the techniques described herein allocate a predefined frame rate of an electronic paper display between multiple different application components requesting to update the display, resulting smooth animation and relatively high-frame updates.

Techniques for operating electronic paper displays

Display enhancement improves performance of constrained display devices such as electrophoretic displays (EPDs). With display enhancement, a display controller rapidly writes area updates to the display, while a union of the area updates is maintained. Area updates which the display controller cannot present are discarded, while the union provides a representation of what area on the screen has been affected. A repair operation takes place which generates an area update encompassing the areas which may have been affected.

Techniques for implementing incremental page transitions on an electronic paper display of an electronic device are described herein. In some instances, an electronic-paper display controller that allows for per-pixel or multiple-pixel-block updating enables the incremental page transitions.

An electronic device in a low power mode, for example an eBook reader device, may use a fast awake module to quickly update a display. The electronic device may receive an interrupt, begin to awaken, present a cached pre-rendered image on the display, and may resume the low power mode or pre-render additional images to refill the cache before resuming the low power mode.
