A roof rail assembly for a motor vehicle having an open frame vehicle architecture includes a side air curtain fixedly coupled with a sport tube extending along a longitudinal axis of the motor vehicle. A one way hinge bracket overlaying the side air curtain includes an upper bracket portion coupled to the sport tube via a fastener extending through an orifice in the upper bracket portion, a lower bracket portion depending from a lower edge of the upper bracket portion, and a plurality of aligned openings disposed on the upper bracket portion below the orifice in the upper bracket portion and above the lower edge of the upper bracket portion. The lower bracket portion rotates about a bend line defined by the plurality of aligned openings as the side air curtain deploys from a stowed condition to an inflated condition.

One way hinge bracket for open frame vehicle side occupant restraint system

A roof rail assembly for a motor vehicle having an open frame vehicle architecture includes a side air curtain fixedly coupled with a sports tube via a first fastener oriented at a first angle relative a horizontal transverse plane of the sports tube. A roof rail trim cover is coupled with the sports tube via a second fastener oriented at a second angle, wherein the first angle and the second angle are not parallel. A cover member depends from the roof rail trim cover and includes a plurality of parallel hinges integrally molded into the cover member. A releasable opening is disposed parallel to the plurality of parallel hinges. Activation of the side air curtain rotates the cover member about the plurality of parallel hinges to open the releasable opening to allow passage of side air curtain through an opening.

Open frame vehicle side occupant restraint system

A vehicle includes a frame. The vehicle is an open-frame vehicle. The frame includes an A-pillar, a B-pillar, and a roof siderail. The roof siderail extends between the A-pillar and the B-pillar. An A-pillar trim member is coupled to the A-pillar and includes a first portion and a second portion. The first portion defines an aperture that receives the second portion. A B-pillar trim member is coupled to the B-pillar. A roof siderail trim member is coupled to the roof siderail and extends between the A-pillar trim member and the B-pillar trim member. An inflatable member is positioned between the frame and at least two of the A-pillar trim member, the B-pillar trim member, and the roof siderail trim member when the inflatable member is in a deflated state. An inflated state of the inflatable member separates the second portion of the A-pillar trim member from the aperture of the A-pillar trim member.

Open-frame vehicle having a two-piece trim member

A curtain airbag for a motor vehicle includes an inflatable cushion and a protective sheet having an attachment edge attached to the airbag and a free-length extending from the attachment edge. The cushion formed into a folded condition from which it is deployable in a deployment direction, and the free-length of the sheet is positioned adjacent to the deployment direction of the cushion. The airbag is installed in the vehicle to deploy adjacent to a daylight opening of the vehicle. Deployment of the cushion during inflation causes the protective sheet to be drawn along with the cushion in the deployment direction so that the sheet overlays the outboard-facing side of the cushion (between the cushion and the daylight opening) and thereby provides a degree of protection against damage to the cushion that may be caused by, for example, broken window glass.

Curtain airbag with protective sheet

An apparatus () for helping to protect an occupant of a vehicle () that has a side structure () and a window opening () includes an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device () inflatable to a deployed condition in which the protection device is positioned between the side structure () and the vehicle occupant and covers at least a portion of the window opening (). The protection device () when in the deployed condition has a first edge portion () connected to an adjacent portion of the vehicle and an opposite second edge portion () that is free from connections to vehicle portions adjacent the second edge portion. At least one tether () has a first end connected to the vehicle proximate to the first end portion () of the protection device () and an opposite second end connected to the second edge portion () of the protection device. The at least one tether () maintains the second edge portion () of the protection device () in the deployed condition and resists outboard movement of the second edge portion through the window opening () in response to occupant movement toward the window opening to restrain the occupant from ejection through the window opening.

Anti-ejection inflatable vehicle occupant protection device

A windshield curtain () is inflatable away from a roof () of a vehicle () to a position between a windshield () of the vehicle and a vehicle occupant and between an instrument panel () of the vehicle and the vehicle occupant. The windshield curtain () includes a center panel () that has a length and opposite first and second side portions (and) that extend along its length. The windshield curtain () also includes first and second side panels (and), each having a respective periphery (and). The periphery () of the first side panel () is interconnected with the center panel () along the first side portion () of the center panel. The periphery () of the second side panel () is interconnected with the center panel along the second side portion () of the center panel.

Inflatable windshield curtain

An inflatable restraint module for an automotive vehicle has a module housing longitudinally mounted adjacent a roof rail with an inflatable restraint mounted therein for movement from a stowed position to an inflated position along an interior of the vehicle body side. The module housing has a flap member, deployable by inflation of the inflatable restraint, to operatively force a headliner assembly over a pillar trim piece and to route the inflatable restraint past the pillar trim.
