The present invention relates to a sizing composition that, when applied to paper substrate, creates a substrate, preferably suitable for inkjet printing, having increased print density, print sharpness, low HST, and/or image dry time, the substrate preferably having high brightness and reduced color-to-color bleed as well. In addition, the present invention relates to a method of reducing the HST of a paper substrate by applying the sizing composition to at least one surface thereof. Further, the application relates to methods of making and using the sizing composition, as well as methods of making and using the paper containing the sizing composition.

A method for making a recording sheet is provided, the recording sheet comprising a sizing or coating composition, which comprises a first binder resin, which is compatible with dry toner binder resin; a second binder resin, which is compatible with liquid toner binder resin; a first pigment, which has a BET surface area of from greater than zero to about 35 m/g or greater; a second pigment, which has a BET surface area of from greater than zero to about 35 m/g or greater, and which is different from the first pigment; and a paper or plastic substrate in contact with the composition, wherein the sizing or coating composition is comprised within first and second sublayers, and said method for making the recording sheet comprising contacting, in any order: the first binder resin; the second binder resin; the first pigment; the second pigment; or a mixture thereof, and the paper or plastic substrate, to produce the recording sheet.

A paper sizing or coating composition is provided, which includes: a first binder resin, which is compatible with dry toner binder resin; a second binder resin, which is compatible with liquid toner binder resin, and which is different from the first binder resin; a first pigment, which has a BET surface area of from greater than zero to about 35 m/g; and a second pigment, which has a BET surface area of about 35 m/g or greater, and which is different from the first pigment. The invention provides a three layered reprographic paper having improved strength, stiffness and curl resistance properties, and a method for making same. The paper has a central core layer made largely of cellulose and bulked with a bulking agent such as a diamide salt. A starch-based metered size press coating is pressed on both sides of the core layer, wherein the starch has a high solid content. The coating forms a three layered paper having an I-beam arrangement with high strength outer layers surrounding a low density core.

The coating compositions may contain other additives such as lubricants, optical brighteners and coating rheology modifiers. The coating formulations can be applied to the base stock using any of a large number of coating techniques including application roll with bent blade, rod, air knife, slot die, curtain spray and gravure. The paper can be used with various inkjet and electrophotographic printing apparatus and techniques.

Gloss coated multifunctional printing paper

Disclosed are a coating composition, coated article, and a method for treating one or more sides of the printable web with the composition, for providing improved printing ink dry time and gloss. The coating composition comprises: a calcium carbonate pigment component comprising a mixture high and low surface area calcium carbonate pigment; a metal salt drying agent; and a cationic dye fixing agent; a pigment binder; optionally a plastic pigment; and optionally an optical brightener; and which provides: a solids content of at least about 25%; a ratio of high to low surface area calcium carbonate in the range of from about 0.5:1 to about 20:1; and a ratio of calcium carbonate pigment component to pigment binder in the range of from about 4:1 to about 50:1.

Fast dry coated inkjet paper

The invention provides a coating composition that provides high brightness, high gloss and superior print quality. The coated product comprises a substrate coated on at least one side with a coating composition comprising a pigment component and a binder component that is made of mixture of two binder resins. Both binder resins are capable of film forming. The first binder resin provides coating gloss and adhesion properties and the second binder resin enhances coating porosity, adhesion, and anti-static properties. The first binder resin that is used at 60-95% by weight of the total binder resin blend is selected from the group consisting of vinyl acetate acrylate, styrene acrylate and styrene butadiene acrylic copolymers. The second binder resin that is used at 5-40% by weight of the total binder resin blend is selected from the group consisting of anion type polystyrene derivatives, polyethylene glycol and polypropylene glycol.

This invention relates to paper products and/or substrates that is multifunctional and suitable for use in a wide range of office printing equipment and contains a base sheet of cellulose fibers and a pigmented composition coated on said substrate, the coating containing a first pigment having a BET surface area of from 50 to 750 m/g, a second pigment having a BET surface area of from 5 to 49 m/g, and polymeric binder; as well as methods of making and using the same.

This invention provides a gloss-coated electrophotographic paper with superior runnability and print quality in colour and monochrome copiers and printers. The coated paper product comprises a paper substrate coated on at least one side with a pigmented coating. The pigment coating consists of a mixture of at least three different pigments and a binder. The coating may further include a lubricant. Optionally, the coating formulation may contain an optical brightening agent, a defoamer and a thickener. In addition, the gloss coated electrophotographic paper of this invention provides a superior toner adhesion in colour and monochrome electrophotographic imaging applications.
