An inductor and a method of making an inductor. The inductor includes a stack of dielectric layers. The inductor also includes a plurality of metal levels comprising patterned metallic features of the inductor. Each metal level is located at an interface between adjacent dielectric layers in the stack. The patterned metallic features include a first plurality of inductor windings arranged in a substantially flat spiral in one of the metal levels. The patterned metallic features also include a second plurality of inductor windings in which each winding is located in a respective one of the plurality of metal levels. The first plurality of windings is connected in series with the second plurality of windings.

Inductor and method of making an inductor

A power amplifier cell comprising a first power amplifier, a second power amplifier and a balun. The balun comprises a first inductor and a second inductor that define a first transformer; and a third inductor and a fourth inductor that define a second transformer. The following: (i) a parasitic capacitance of the first power amplifier; (ii) a leakage inductance of the first transformer; and (iii) a capacitive coupling between the first inductor and the second inductor, contribute to a first impedance matching circuit for the first power amplifier. Also, the following (iv) a parasitic capacitance of the second power amplifier; (v) a leakage inductance of the second transformer; and (vi) a capacitive coupling between the third inductor and the fourth inductor, contribute to a second impedance matching circuit for the second power amplifier.

Power amplifier cell

The disclosure relates to a circuit comprising a balun portion, a balanced side impedance transforming element and an unbalanced side impedance transforming element. The balun portion at least partly transforms the signal between a balanced signal input/output terminal and an unbalanced signal input/output terminal. The impedance transforming elements at least partly alter the impedance presented at the balanced and unbalanced side of the balun. In addition at least one matching transmission element is provided. By separating the role of impedance transformation from balun signal conversion, the useful bandwidth of the circuit can be improved in comparison to a balun that provides both signal conversion and impedance transformation functions.

Circuit

A power amplifier cell () comprising: a first power amplifier (), a second power amplifier () and a balun (). The balun () comprising: a first transmission line (); a second transmission line (); a third transmission line (); a fourth transmission line (); and a biasing circuit () connected between (i) a reference terminal, and (ii) a second end of the second transmission line and a second end of the fourth transmission line.

A Doherty amplifier has different drain voltages applied to the power transistors of the main and peaking stages. The impedance inverter comprises at least one first series phase shifting element between the output of the main amplifier and the Doherty amplifier output and at least one second series phase shifting element between the output of the peaking amplifier and the Doherty amplifier output. This provides a wideband combiner. The combination of this wideband combiner and different drain drive levels provides an improved combination of efficiency and bandwidth.

Doherty amplifier

A Doherty amplifier has at least one peaking amplifier which has first and second drain connections, wherein the first drain connection is connected to the output network, and the other second drain connection is connection to the load. By providing two drain connections, separate package leads to the peaking amplifier can be taken into account when designing the impedance inverter and an output impedance. In this way, the circuit operation can be optimized both for the impedance inversion function and for driving the output load.

A Doherty amplifier is disclosed, being adapted to receive an RF input signal and to output an RF output signal and comprising a main amplifier and a peak amplifier, each comprising: a first amplifier (T, T') and a second amplifier (T, T&#x2032;), each amplifier having a respective input terminal and a respective output terminal, the first amplifier and the second amplifier being adapted to amplify a respective input signal derived from the RF input signal and received at the respective input terminal and to deliver a first output signal and a second output signal, respectively; a first phase shifter (&#x2032;) and a second phase shifter (&#x2032;) coupled to the output terminal of the first amplifier and to the output terminal of the second amplifier, respectively; a third phase shifter (&#x2032;); and a fourth phase shifter (&#x2032;); wherein the Doherty amplifier further comprises a first combining node (A) and a second combining node (B) and, wherein each third phase shifter is coupled between the respective first phase shifter and the first combining node; each fourth phase shifter is coupled between the respective second phase shifter and the second combining node, and the third phase shifter of each of the main amplifier and the peak amplifier is adapted to be electrically coupled to the respective fourth phase shifter the output RF signal being obtained from a signal obtained in the first combining node and a signal obtained in the second combining node. An associated PCB is also disclosed.
