This invention describes a photonic sensing method and device based on the periodic dielectric structures of photonic forbidden band, in which the sensing process is carried out through the measurement of variation in signal amplitude as it exits the device. The variation in amplitude is due to a variation in the refraction index of the structure, as a consequence of the presence of the substances that are the object of the sensing. Among the advantages provided by the invention, it is worth mentioning its simplicity in the sensing process; its high level of integration, allowing for a design of reduced proportions; and its adaptability to dielectric structures of one, two or three dimensions.

Photonic sensing method and device

The invention relates to an optical security mark that can be applied to an object, said mark comprising a structure made of a metamaterial that generates a magnetic response to incident radiation having a wavelength (&#x3bb;) corresponding to a specific code of formula &#x3bc;r(&#x3bb;) where &#x3bc;r is the relative magnetic permeability of the metamaterial and &#x3bb; is a wavelength of the incident radiation having a value of between 15 nm and 1100 nm, or a specific code of formula &#x3bb;(&#x3bc;r) or combinations of said codes. Said mark has a first tranverse dimension bx in a first transverse extension of the metamaterial and a second transverse dimension by in a second transverse extension of the metamaterial, different from the first transversal dimension, the first transverse dimension and the second transverse dimension each being at least equal to the wavelength (&#x3bb;) of the incident radiation.

A method and device capable of evaluating the specific values of the polarization state of the signal transmitted in a photonic transmission system for a number of frequencies of one or more of the pulses extracted from the optical signal by means of the translation of the frequential components of polarization state of one or more pulses to the time domain by means of the use of an optical Fourier transformer, and their sampling, quantification and subsequent analysis. From the analysis the variation in the polarization state versus frequency is calculated, as well as its associate PMD vector and the DGD present in the signal transmitted. This information may be used as a control signal for a PMD compensator device in order to upgrade the quality of communication in the system.

Method and device for measuring polarization state and polarization mode dispersion in photonic transmission systems

The invention relates to a method of dividing the power of an input electromagnetic signal into two equal-power signals with a relative phase difference of 180&#xb0; between them and an equal propagation delay. The inventive method makes use of a photonic crystal coupler comprising two parallel guides which are disposed close to one another and which are based on coupled cavities. The method consists in exciting the odd mode of the coupler which, owing to the symmetry thereof, ensures that the field maxima coincide in one guide with the minima in the adjacent guide, thereby producing a relative phase difference of 180&#xb0;. The two output signals are obtained through the spatial separation of the guides forming the coupler, making use of the property possessed by guides in photonic crystals for high transmission efficiency through very tight curves. In this way, the size of the structure can be reduced considerably. The inventive method can be used for both two-dimensional and three-dimensional photonic crystals.
